AWS Cloud Quest: Cloud Practitioner

The only free AWS badge you earn with your hands

Every other entry-level AWS credential, paid or free, ends in questions. This one ends when you have built twelve working things. Each assignment starts with a conversation in a virtual city: a customer describes a problem, and the game, rebuilt as version two with AI-driven dialogue, rewards asking the right follow-up questions. Then you choose an approach and build it for real in an AWS environment, and the game checks whether it works. Videos, architecture diagrams and short quizzes fill in the theory around each task.

The services covered are the classic core: virtual servers and automatic scaling, load balancing, object and file storage, relational and key-value databases, networking, permissions and monitoring. That is roughly the vocabulary of the paid Cloud Practitioner exam, with the difference that you have clicked through each of them yourself.

What the game format does well and badly

• It makes the services concrete. Building a load-balanced web tier once teaches more than reading its definition five times.
• It is hard to fake. You cannot pass an assignment by guessing; the environment either works or it does not.
• It is guided. Each build comes with instructions, so finishing shows you can follow a design through, not that you could have designed it alone.
• It suits short sessions. Twelve assignments in about twelve hours works out at roughly an hour each, which fits an evening after work.
• The game layer is optional flavour. Avatars, vehicles and tournaments are there for motivation; if they irritate you, the assignments still stand on their own.

AWS lists the role at about twelve hours. Two of Cloud Quest's nine roles are free, this one and a generative AI path; the others need a Skill Builder subscription. AWS has also used this role as an exam-free way for Cloud Practitioner holders to renew their certification, though the listing we found for that route is marked as replaced, so check the current terms on Skill Builder before relying on it.

Version two and what carried over

AWS has relaunched Cloud Quest as version two, with a rebuilt engine, AI-driven customer conversations, a new avatar editor and reworked tournaments. Players who started under the old version keep their badges, roles and completed assignments, so there is no reason to restart. Across all nine roles AWS now counts more than 130 live builds and over 700 quiz questions; the free Cloud Practitioner role is a small, deliberate slice of that. The badge itself arrives through Credly, like every AWS training badge, and can also be shown on your Skill Builder Skills Profile. Accepting it requires a Credly login registered to the email your Skill Builder account uses. If you enjoy the format, the Generative AI Practitioner role is the other free path, with ten assignments; everything beyond those two sits behind the subscription.
