Free is not the same as easy

Most free training badges sit at the bottom of a vendor's ladder. This one does not. Skill Builder labels the learning plan advanced and the assessment intermediate, names solutions architects as the audience, and builds the path from introductory Lambda material up through event-driven architecture, scaling, security and observability, and deployment. Someone who has never deployed anything will find the second half of it abstract. Someone who has built even a small application on AWS will find it a well-organised tour of patterns they half know.

That positioning makes it more interesting than the entry badges. It is one of the few ways to put an AWS name to serverless knowledge without paying for an exam, and it runs alongside part of what AWS's developer certification asks about, API Gateway included.

What is free and what is not

So the badge itself costs nothing. The one paid item is a troubleshooting lab, useful but not required: the badge is earned by the assessment, and you may go straight to it. The pass mark is 80 per cent, questions are randomised on each attempt, and Credly delivers the badge five to seven business days later. Neither the question count nor a time limit is published, though Skill Builder's catalogue puts the assessment at ninety minutes.

Where it fits

• After an entry badge or Cloud Practitioner, as a specialised next step that costs nothing.
• Before the developer associate exam, as a free check on one area that exam shares with it.
• For architects moving from servers to functions, as a structured way through the patterns rather than a pile of blog posts.

It remains a training badge. It is unproctored, it lives in a different category from AWS Certifications on AWS's own badge page, and recruiters filtering on AWS credentials will be looking for the certifications. Its use is as a proof of learning to put next to code you have shipped.

The seven courses in order

• Getting into the Serverless Mindset, half an hour on how event-driven thinking changes design.
• AWS Lambda Foundations and a free introductory Lambda lab, the hands-on core of the early path.
• Designing Event-Driven Architectures and Scaling Serverless Architectures, the two courses where most of the architectural ideas live.
• Security and Observability for Serverless Applications and Deploying Serverless Applications, the operational half.
• Amazon API Gateway for Serverless Applications, on putting an HTTP front door on functions.

Skill Builder dates this version of the plan to April 2026. It names three services as its focus, Lambda, API Gateway and DynamoDB, yet no course in the path is devoted to DynamoDB, so if the data side of serverless is new to you, expect to read around it before the assessment. As with every AWS training badge, it is issued through Credly to the email address on your account, and AWS says issue can take up to about a week while it checks the result.
