Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate
This certificate covers building data pipelines on the Databricks platform: the lakehouse model, incremental processing, the SQL and Python interfaces, and the governance layer over them.

Your employer's purchasing decision sets its value
Two years, and the only way to renew is to sit it again
Neither a credit scheme nor a continuing-education path exists, so keeping this current means paying the fee and taking the exam every other year for as long as you want to hold it. That is the shortest validity with the least flexible renewal of anything in this catalogue apart from the Kubernetes administrator exam. If you leave a Databricks shop, the sensible move is usually to let it lapse rather than to maintain a badge for a platform you no longer touch.
Who should sit it, and who should not
- Sit it if the platform is already your working week. The exam describes what you do, and certified engineers are comparatively scarce, which inside the ecosystem is worth something.
- Sit it if your employer is adopting the platform and will fund the renewals. Somebody has to be the person who knows how it fits together.
- Avoid sitting it on spec. Unlike a cloud provider certificate, which at least transfers across employers on that cloud, this narrows to organisations that bought one product.
- Not a sensible first data certificate. A vendor-neutral or cloud-platform exam teaches more transferable ground and costs the same order of money.
- Note that the vendor publishes a wider family, including professional-tier and machine-learning paths, and this site documents one of them.

Read the table as a decision about where you expect to be in four years. Two Databricks sittings cost more than one AWS sitting and a half-price renewal, and the AWS badge survives a move between employers who run that cloud. What the Databricks certificate buys in exchange is specificity: a hiring manager inside a lakehouse shop knows exactly what you have been near, which a cloud badge does not tell them. Microsoft's equivalent runs on a twelve-month cycle with a free online renewal, which is a third pattern again, and the pattern matters more than the sitting fee once you hold any of them past the first cycle.
The exam guide, and the score nobody prints
The May 2026 exam guide divides the paper into seven weighted sections, the two largest worth roughly a fifth each and the smallest a mere sliver, and every one of them is phrased as something you do on the platform rather than something you know about it: incremental processing, the interfaces in SQL and Python, the governance layer, the lakehouse model underneath. Forty-five scored multiple-choice questions in ninety minutes, no reference material, online or at a centre. The passing score is not on the exam page; Databricks states it in its certification FAQ, and the record leaves the field pointing there rather than copying a figure that may move.
Spend the preparation in a workspace, not a book
Databricks recommends its own Data Engineering learning path and roughly half a year on the platform, and the second half of that is the part that passes people. The questions assume you have watched a job fail on a schema change, fixed a permission on a table, and chosen between streaming and batch for a real latency requirement. A trial workspace and a small pipeline you built and broke teaches that; a course watched at double speed does not.
What a question looks like
Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.
A pipeline reprocesses an entire source table nightly because the team could not determine which records had changed. Runtime and cost have grown with the data. Which processing approach addresses this, and what does the source need to provide for it to work?
The first half has an obvious answer and the second half is where the mark is. Incremental processing needs something from the source, whether that is a reliable change indicator or a mechanism that supplies one, and a candidate who names the approach without stating its precondition has described a wish rather than a design. The exam pairs technique with prerequisite repeatedly.
What it costs to get and to keep
| Item | Amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Registration fee | 200 USD | the vendor's published figure. Online or test-centre delivery at the same price (read 12 September 2026) |
| Renewal every two years | 200 USD | the same fee again, because recertification means sitting the then-current version. No credits, no shorter renewal paper, no alternative (read 12 September 2026) |
| Practice test | not published | no product through our practice-test partner when we checked, so the vendor's own learning path and sample questions are the realistic preparation (read 12 September 2026) |
How much preparation, from where you are
- You build pipelines on the platform
- Short. The gaps are usually governance and the parts of the platform your organisation has not licensed, which the exam covers regardless.
- You engineer data on another stack
- The concepts transfer almost entirely and the product surface does not. Expect to spend the time on how this platform names and arranges things you already do.
- You are an analyst moving upstream
- A real climb, and a reasonable destination if your organisation runs the platform. The SQL side will be familiar; incremental loading and the governance model will not.
What passing this does not prove
- Whether the data arriving is correct, which remains the job.
- Cost management, which on a consumption-priced platform is where the pain is.
- Anything transferable to a stack this vendor does not sell.
- Whether the platform was the right purchase, which was decided above you.
Against the alternatives
- DP-700 — Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate
- Microsoft's integrated analytics platform certificate, the closest structural equivalent. Choose by which product your employer bought, because neither transfers to the other.
- DEA-C01 — AWS Certified Data Engineer – Associate
- AWS's data engineering associate, built on composable services rather than one product, with three years of validity and considerably wider recognition.
- DP-900 — Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Fundamentals
- Vocabulary rather than practice, and a cheaper way to find out whether data engineering interests you before committing to a platform badge.
Data Engineer Associate — quick answers
Is a single-product certificate worth it?
Inside an organisation that runs the product, genuinely yes, because the supply of certified people is small and the demand is concentrated. Outside one, it is close to worthless, a harder bargain than any cloud credential puts to you. Decide whether you expect to stay in this ecosystem.
Why is there no continuing-education route?
No explanation has been offered, and what it amounts to is a credential carrying a repeating exam instead of a repeating invoice. Over six years that is three sittings, which is worth factoring in before treating it as a one-off purchase.
How should I prepare?
On the platform, using the vendor's own learning path. There is no practice-test product through our partner, and the exam leans on operational familiarity rather than recall, so time in a workspace is worth more than reading about one.
Where is the passing score?
Not on the exam page. Databricks publishes it in its certification FAQ rather than beside the other exam facts, so the record points there instead of repeating a number that could change without the exam page changing. Aim well above whatever the FAQ says on the day you read it.
Databricks or the AWS data engineer exam first?
AWS, unless your employer already runs Databricks. The AWS paper costs less per sitting, lasts a year longer, renews at half price, and transfers between every employer on that cloud. Come to this one when the platform is your working week and somebody else is paying for the cycle.
