AI Fundamentals: Foundations for Understanding AI

Concepts first, products later

The earning criteria list the skills IBM claims for a holder, and they read like the contents page of a good introductory textbook: what machine learning is and how it differs from how people learn, the main types of learning, how neural networks and deep learning work, the forms AI takes, where bias comes from and what can be done about it, and how to use generative AI tools responsibly, including writing prompts. What the list does not contain is a product. That is the most useful change from the earlier badge: the knowledge is portable to any platform an employer happens to use.

Reading the badge honestly

An 80 percent bar on every quiz is stricter than many free courses set, and it means you cannot coast through the later modules on a strong start. It is still a course credential. The quizzes are taken online without supervision, and the badge certifies that you completed IBM's modules to that standard. Building or evaluating a model is outside what it certifies. IBM labels it intermediate on Credly, but nothing in the content assumes prior study, so treat the label as a description of length rather than of difficulty.

• Worth doing if your job now involves AI tools and nobody has explained what they are doing under the surface.
• Worth doing as a structured first week before a paid cloud AI exam, since the concepts are the same whichever vendor you later choose.
• Less useful if you have studied machine learning at any depth; the badge would describe knowledge you already hold.
• Pair it with the Language and Vision sibling if you want the applied half, and with a vendor exam if you want something proctored.
