LPIC-1 — Linux Administrator
LPIC-1 attests to Linux administration while staying clear of any single distribution: the command line, filesystems, packages, processes, networking basics, scripting and the security fundamentals underneath.
A pair of ninety-minute papers, and neither alone will do.

Its distinguishing feature on this site is longevity. Five years of validity is the longest non-permanent period anywhere in our catalogue, and the renewal route is unusually forgiving: passing the level above renews the level below, so an administrator who keeps progressing never sits a renewal exam at all. Set against certificates expiring in one, two or three years, that materially changes what the credential costs to hold over a working life, and it is rarely part of the comparison people actually make.
The second distinguishing feature is language coverage. Test centres offer considerably more languages than most Linux certificates, and the remote option covers several of them. That matters for a technical exam where reading precision decides marks, and it is the practical reason many candidates outside English-speaking markets choose this over the alternatives. The format is multiple choice with fill-in-the-blank items, so a certain amount of exact recall is required in a way that pure multiple choice avoids.
- Both exams are required. Passing one gives you nothing to put on a CV, and the fee is per exam rather than per certificate.
- Scoring runs from 200 to 800 with 500 to pass, per exam, which looks like a percentage and is nothing of the kind.
- Fill-in-the-blank items reward precision, so approximate knowledge of command syntax costs marks that multiple choice would forgive.
- Our practice-test partner covers the first exam only, as the path for the second returned nothing when we checked.
- No prerequisites, and the recommended background is ordinary administration rather than a prior certificate.
Where you can sit it, and in what
| Language | Test centre | Online proctoring |
|---|---|---|
| English | Yes | Yes |
| German | Yes | Yes |
| Japanese | Yes | Yes |
| Brazilian Portuguese | Yes | Yes |
| Spanish | Yes | Yes |
| Chinese, Simplified and Traditional | Yes | No |
Six languages at a centre and five from home is a wider offer than either of the certificates this one is usually weighed against, and for a German-speaking or Spanish-speaking administrator it may be the deciding fact. Version 5.0 is current, with exam codes 101-500 and 102-500, each paper running ninety minutes over sixty questions. The two can be sat in either order and weeks apart; the certificate exists once both are passed. LPI recommends nothing beforehand and offers its Linux Essentials paper as an optional opener for anyone who has never administered a system, which is a courtesy rather than a rung.
Against Linux+ and RHCSA, in one paragraph each
Linux+ is a single ninety-minute paper, English only, valid for three years, and its strongest argument is that it renews CompTIA's other certificates alongside it; choose it if you already hold those and none of the LPI languages matters to you. RHCSA is performed on live systems, tied to Red Hat's family, and valid for three years; choose it if a target employer runs Red Hat, because nothing knowledge-tested carries the same weight there. LPIC-1 is the neutral, widely translated, longest-lived option, and the one whose renewal can be managed for a career by climbing to LPIC-2 or by paying LPI membership and logging twenty development units annually. Choose it when no employer has chosen for you.
Sit 101 first, and type every command you revise
The first paper covers the system architecture, installation, package management and the command-line basics that the second paper builds on, so it is the natural opener and the one our partner's practice test covers. Revise at a terminal rather than from a list, because the fill-in-the-blank items ask for the exact command, option or path, and a candidate who can pick the right tool from four options is not yet a candidate who can type it unprompted.
What a question looks like
Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.
State the command, with the option required, that would show which process is holding a particular file open, given only the file path.
There is nothing to choose between. Fill-in-the-blank items appear throughout both papers and they are the reason experienced administrators sometimes score worse than expected: knowing which tool to reach for is not the same as reproducing its exact invocation without a shell in front of you. Candidates who prepare only by reading meet this format badly.
What it costs to get and to keep
| Item | Amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Exam 101-500 | 200 USD | LPI's United States pricing page; the exam is half of the certificate rather than the whole of it (read 12 September 2026) |
| Exam 102-500 | 200 USD | the second half, required before the certificate exists (read 12 September 2026) |
| Both exams, Germany | 176 EUR | per exam on LPI's German pricing, so the certificate costs twice this figure in that market (read 12 September 2026) |
| Renewal after five years | not published | retake the current exams, or pass LPIC-2, which renews this level without a separate sitting (read 12 September 2026) |
How much preparation, from where you are
- You administer Linux servers
- The knowledge is largely there and the format is the work. Practise writing commands from memory rather than recognising them, because the fill-in-the-blank items do not forgive approximation.
- You are moving from Windows administration
- The concepts map more cleanly than the syntax does. Budget most of the time for the command line itself, and keep a system you administer daily rather than reading about one.
- You want the longest-lived Linux certificate
- This is it, and that is a legitimate reason to choose it. Five years, plus renewal by progression, is the cheapest upkeep of any Linux credential here.
What passing this does not prove
- Speed at a shell, which is what the job rewards.
- Any one distribution's conventions in depth, which is the cost of neutrality.
- Whether you would automate the task rather than repeat it.
- Anything about operating at a scale where the interesting failures start.
Against the alternatives
- EX200 — Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA)
- Performed on live systems rather than answered, and the stronger signal to anyone hiring for hands-on work. Choose it if your market runs Red Hat and accept a harder exam day.
- XK0-006 — CompTIA Linux+
- One exam rather than two, English only, three years rather than five, and inside CompTIA's renewal chain. That chain is the main reason to prefer it.
- 201-450 + 202-450 — LPIC-2 — Linux Engineer
- The level above, which requires this one to be current and renews it on passing. Worth planning as a sequence if you intend to stay in Linux administration.
101-500 + 102-500 — quick answers
Do I need both exams?
Yes. No certificate is issued until you clear both papers, and each carries its own fee, which is the detail that makes comparisons against single-exam certificates misleading. Budget for the pair from the start.
Is five years really an advantage?
Over a career, considerably. Most technical certificates run one to three years, and each renewal is a cost in money or time. Five years, combined with renewal by progression, means an administrator who keeps learning may never sit a renewal exam for this at all.
What is the best way to drill the fill-in-the-blank items?
At a terminal, writing commands rather than reading them. That format is the commonest reason experienced candidates underperform: they know exactly which tool solves the problem and cannot reproduce the option letter without trying it. Repetition on a live system fixes it quickly.
Which language should I sit it in?
Whichever you read most precisely under pressure. LPI supports more languages than the alternatives, in test centres more than remotely, and for a paper with exact-recall items that precision is worth more than familiarity with English technical vocabulary.
Is Linux Essentials required first?
No. It is an optional entry paper for people who have never administered a system, and LPI presents it as an optional entry point rather than a prerequisite. Anyone who has installed a distribution and fixed something on it can start at LPIC-1 directly.
