Microsoft Applied Skills: Get started developing agents in Microsoft Foundry

Small by design

Microsoft has been cutting Applied Skills into smaller pieces, and says so on its own overview page: the newer credentials are meant to be quicker to prepare for and quicker to earn. This one shows the approach. The whole evaluated scope fits in one sentence, deploy a model, create an agent on it, and test it, and the free preparation is a single learning unit of under an hour. The value lies less in breadth than in the fact that you must make the thing run in a real portal against a clock.

What a beginner needs to bring

Beginner here means new to agents, not new to everything. Microsoft expects a solid working knowledge of the redesigned Foundry portal and a grasp of generative AI concepts: what a model deployment is, how a system instruction shapes behaviour, and why an agent needs tools or data to be more than a chat window. If those are unfamiliar, spend time with a fundamentals course first. The lab itself is unforgiving about portal navigation, because forty-five minutes disappears quickly when you are hunting for a setting.

• Build one agent beforehand in your own Azure account, following the learning unit, and then build a second without it.
• Know where deployments live; a model that is not deployed cannot be attached to an agent, and that is the first dependency the lab tests.
• Test deliberately: the third task asks you to show the agent works, so prepare prompts that prove the behaviour the email asks for.
• Use current material: Microsoft's page refers to the new Foundry portal, and older tutorials may show screens that no longer match.

For an employer the credential shows something specific and current: you have built a working agent on Microsoft's platform in a supervised setting where the result was checked automatically. What it cannot demonstrate is the ability to design a reliable agent for production, evaluate its answers systematically or keep its costs under control. Microsoft offers further Applied Skills for agents with integrated tools and for connecting agents to external tool servers, which take the same idea further.

Failure is cheap here, which changes how to approach it. Microsoft lists no charge for the lab and a retake is possible after 72 hours, so there is a case for sitting it once early, after the learning unit, to see exactly what the tasks look like. Keep in mind that an attempt counts as soon as the lab launches, and that practising in your own Azure subscription may cost a little in usage. The credential does not expire, and if Microsoft retires it as the platform evolves your record keeps showing it as current for a further two years. Given how quickly agent tooling changes, the date you earned it will matter to a reader as much as the name.
