Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Expert (Microsoft 365 Apps)
Somewhere in most organisations sits one workbook that a whole team relies on and only one person truly understands. The Excel Expert certificate is written about that file: protecting it, auditing its formulas, recording the macro that saves an hour a week, summarising it with PivotTables.
Fifty minutes of tasks inside Excel, taken through Certiport, with no associate certificate required first.

What the expert paper adds
The associate exam proves someone can build a tidy sheet. This one takes that for granted and treats the workbook as a shared, long-lived object: it has to survive well-meaning colleagues, calculate in the right order, draw on other files, and carry a little recorded automation. Microsoft's own examples of expert work are business templates, financial charts with two axes, amortisation schedules and inventory registers, which is a fair description of the files that quietly run a department. Four weighted areas make up the exam.
| Area | Weight | What it holds in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Workbook options and settings | 10–15 % | Protecting sheets, ranges and structure; calculation options; links to other workbooks; enabling and copying macros |
| Managing and formatting data | 30–35 % | Flash Fill and fill series, custom number formats, validation rules, subtotals, duplicate removal, formula-driven conditional formatting |
| Advanced formulas and macros | 25–30 % | Nested logic, old and new lookup functions, date arithmetic, Goal Seek and Scenario Manager, loan functions, dynamic filtering and sorting, formula auditing, recording simple macros |
| Advanced charts and tables | 25–30 % | Dual-axis charts and newer types such as waterfall and histogram, PivotTables with slicers and calculated fields, PivotCharts |
Read the weights against what candidates usually rehearse. Most preparation goes on formulas, because formulas feel like the hard part. Yet the largest block is data management and formatting, which is full of features people half-know: a number format that shows thousands with a suffix, a validation rule that refuses a date outside the quarter, conditional formatting whose rule is a formula rather than a preset. For someone who has drilled them these are quick marks. For someone who has not, they are slow minutes spent searching dialogs.
- It is performed, not answered. You carry out each task in Excel itself, much as in a lab, so recognition earns nothing.
- Fifty minutes, and no unscheduled breaks. Microsoft permits breaks on its other exams but not on MOS papers, and suggests an hour of seat time.
- No documentation lookup. The in-exam access to Microsoft Learn that role-based candidates get does not extend to MOS.
- Retakes are relaxed. After a first failure you wait a day, then two days between later attempts, with no yearly cap.
The pass mark is not published
Microsoft reports Office exam scores on a scale up to 1,000 and says the mark needed depends on the individual exam. The MO-211 pages we read give no figure, so this page records none. Treat any number quoted elsewhere as unverified.
A certificate on its own, or half of a larger title
Passing MO-211 earns the Excel Expert certificate outright; nothing has to be held first. The same pass also counts towards a separate umbrella title, Microsoft Office Specialist: Expert, which needs the three-exam associate title plus two expert papers in different applications. Because only Word and Excel have expert exams, that in practice means one of each. For most working people the single Excel certificate is the one that matters, and the umbrella title is mainly of interest to school and college programmes that reward completing a whole ladder. Either way the clock is the same: the Learn page lists a sixty-month renewal frequency, and Microsoft's expiry policy says MOS certifications lapse every five years.
What a question looks like
Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.
In the Loans worksheet, add a column that returns the monthly repayment for each loan from its annual rate, term in years and principal, display the result as a positive currency value, and set the workbook so the Summary sheet recalculates only when the user asks it to.
Three separate skills hide in one instruction. The payment function returns a negative figure by convention, so the sign must be handled deliberately; the annual rate and term have to be converted to months; and manual calculation lives in the workbook options, far from the cells the candidate is staring at. Each step is simple. Remembering all three against a clock is the test.
What it costs to get and to keep
| Item | Amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Exam fee | not published | priced by the country or region where the exam is proctored; no figure was shown on the Microsoft Learn pages read on the recording day (read 26 September 2026) |
| Retakes | not published | the MOS retake policy sets a 24-hour wait, then 48 hours between later attempts, with no annual limit; whether each retake is charged is not stated on the pages read (read 26 September 2026) |
| Preparation | not published | Microsoft points to about 150 hours of instruction and hands-on experience, and Learn lists no training for this exam; the free skills outline is the only official study material (read 26 September 2026) |
| Renewal | not published | the certificate lapses after five years (Learn gives 60 months); Microsoft offers no shortened renewal test for MOS, so the cost of renewing equals a fresh sitting (read 26 September 2026) |
How much preparation, from where you are
- You hold the Excel Associate certificate or work at that level
- The gap sits in protection settings, formula auditing, the what-if tools and PivotTable options. Practise them as timed tasks rather than reading about them.
- You build financial models every day
- The formulas will feel easy. The risk is the settings and formatting features your own files never needed, such as custom number formats and workbook structure protection.
- You use Excel casually
- Take the associate exam first. The expert outline assumes associate skills as its floor, and Microsoft's 150-hour guidance applies here too.
What passing this does not prove
- Whether a model is structured so another analyst can audit it months later.
- Power Query and the data model, which the skills outline does not list.
- Writing VBA by hand; macros are recorded, named and lightly edited, not programmed.
- Choosing a chart that represents the data honestly; the task tells you what to build.
Against the alternatives
- Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Associate (Microsoft 365 Apps) (MO-210)
- The associate paper certifies building a clean sheet; this one certifies keeping a shared, formula-heavy workbook safe and analysable. Sit the associate first unless your daily work is already at expert level.
- Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300)
- Where the goal is reporting across many data sources, the Power BI analyst certificate is the next move. The Excel expert paper stays inside one workbook; the analyst exam begins where one workbook becomes the limit.
MO-211 — quick answers
Do I need the Excel Associate certificate before MO-211?
No. The Excel Expert certificate has no prerequisite on its Learn page. The associate title only becomes a requirement if you are aiming for the umbrella Microsoft Office Specialist: Expert, which combines the three-exam associate title with two expert passes.
How is MO-211 delivered?
Through Certiport, the provider Microsoft names for MOS scheduling. You get fifty minutes, you work inside Excel rather than choosing answers, and you cannot pause the clock for an unscheduled break.
Which languages is it offered in?
The certification page lists English, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), French, German, Japanese and Spanish, while the exam page itself lists English only. Confirm the edition with your test centre before booking anything other than English.
What score do I need to pass?
Microsoft does not publish one for this exam. Its scoring page says Office exams are reported up to 1,000 and that the required score varies by exam, so we record none rather than repeat a figure we cannot confirm.
Does the certificate expire?
Yes, after five years. Microsoft's expiry rules set that term for every MOS certificate, and the Learn listing agrees at sixty months. There is no lighter renewal test, so budget for sitting whichever Excel Expert exam is current then.
