A presentation is judged in the room, yet this exam never asks whether your slides would persuade anybody. It asks whether you control the machinery underneath them: masters and layouts, sections, zoom links, embedded media, the order of animations and the presenter tools.

That split between persuasion and mechanics is the right lens for the certificate. Nobody can grade rhetoric in fifty minutes, but anyone can check whether a candidate changes a layout once in the slide master rather than on thirty slides, or builds a shorter custom show for the board rather than saving a second copy of the file. Those habits separate the person who maintains a company's decks from the person who fights them, and MO-310 checks them by having you perform each one in PowerPoint.

Where candidates lose time
The heaviest area is formatting content, which feels easy until a task names a feature you have never looked for. Section Zoom and Slide Zoom, ink drawing, screen recording and motion paths are all on the outline, and each is a ribbon hunt for someone who has only ever typed bullet points onto the default layout. The masters are the other trap. Editing the wrong layout, or the slide instead of its master, produces something that looks right on screen and scores wrong.
- Explore the master view before the exam, not during it. Know which changes belong to the slide master, which to a single layout and which to one slide.
- Work from the Animation Pane. Reordering and timing effects is far quicker there than by clicking objects on the slide.
- Rehearse exporting. Saving to video, PDF and other formats sits on the outline and is easy to forget.
- Add alt text by reflex. Accessibility tasks are scattered across the outline rather than confined to one area.
Who it serves
Marketing assistants, trainers, sales support staff and anyone who keeps a template library in order will find it a fair, checkable proof of skill. Microsoft's own examples of in-scope work are sales decks, staff training, teaching material and self-running kiosk shows. On a technical CV it adds little. Add passes in two other applications, such as Word and Excel, and it counts towards Microsoft's three-exam associate title.
Microsoft Learn carries no course for MO-310, which leaves preparation to you: the published skills outline, a practice deck and a timer. The MO-310 exam page redirected to the certification page when we read it, which is why no retirement date is recorded here.
What a question looks like
Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.
In the Quarterly deck, change the font of every slide title to Georgia without editing any individual slide, then create a custom slide show named Board that contains only slides 1, 4 and 7 to 9.
The first half is a master edit. A candidate who retypes titles slide by slide may end with the right look but has broken the instruction to leave slides untouched. The second half lives in the Slide Show settings, a menu many daily users never open. Neither step is difficult once known; both are invisible to someone who has not practised them.

How much preparation, from where you are
- You build decks weekly on the default layout
- Spend most of your time on masters, sections, zoom links and the Animation Pane. The rest will be familiar.
- You maintain your organisation's templates
- Short preparation. Check media, 3D models, ink and the print and export options your own work rarely needs.
- You seldom open PowerPoint
- Treat Microsoft's figure of roughly 150 hours of instruction and practice as realistic rather than cautious.
What passing this does not prove
- Whether a deck communicates; narrative, visual hierarchy and delivery are outside the exam.
- Designing a brand template system from scratch; masters are modified, not conceived.
- Speaking to an audience or presenting live.
- Co-authoring a shared deck beyond managing comments.

MO-310 — quick answers
Does MO-310 earn a certificate on its own?
Yes. Passing it earns Microsoft Office Specialist: PowerPoint Associate (Microsoft 365 Apps). The same pass can also count as one of the three required for the broader associate title.
Is it multiple choice?
No. Microsoft describes MOS exams as taking place live in the application, so every instruction is performed in PowerPoint and the finished file is what gets marked.
Can I take a break during the exam?
Not an unscheduled one. MOS papers are the one Microsoft exam family where the clock cannot be paused for a break, so plan the fifty minutes as a single sitting.
Does it expire?
After five years it lapses, matching both Microsoft's MOS expiry rule and the sixty months printed on Learn. To stay certified you sit the current PowerPoint paper again.
