About This Course

Fables: The Soul of a NationFables are more than just stories - they are the distilled soul of a nation, a reflection of its values, wisdom, and way of life passed down through generations. In the case of China, traditional fables once served as the carriers of Confucian ethics, folk beliefs, and everyday philosophy. Unfortunately, much of this rich cultural heritage was severely damaged or lost during the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), a political movement that sought to eradicate the "Four Olds": old customs, old culture, old habits, and old ideas.

However, not all was lost. Over the past 600 years, millions of Chinese migrated to Taiwan, bringing with them customs, dialects, and traditions from various regions. In 1949, following the Chinese Civil War, approximately four million people retreated with the Republic of China government to Taiwan.

Among them was my uncle, whose stories and memories of old China remained vivid throughout his life. Taiwan became a safe haven for preserving traditional Chinese culture, including its language, rituals, festivals, and moral teachings. Today, many of the fables that continue to be taught and cherished originate from Taiwan, where traditional Chinese values-such as filial piety, integrity, perseverance, and kindness-have been faithfully preserved.

These stories continue to be told in homes, schools, and books, forming a living cultural archive. Fables not only entertain but also instruct. They reflect traditional virtues and cultural values in a concise and memorable form.
