The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is a key step for individuals pursuing a professional engineering license in the United States. Administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), the FE exam is often taken by engineering students nearing the completion of their undergraduate studies, although it is open to anyone with a qualifying degree. It is designed to test the foundational knowledge and understanding of engineering principles across various disciplines, such as civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering, among others.
The exam consists of multiple-choice questions covering a broad range of topics, including mathematics, engineering ethics, thermodynamics, materials science, and fluid mechanics. Passing the FE exam qualifies individuals to be recognized as Engineers-in-Training (EIT) or Engineering Interns (EI), depending on the state they are in. It is the first of two exams required to become a licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
The second is the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam, which is taken after gaining several years of work experience. The FE exam is now offered exclusively as a computer-based test, and candidates can choose from different disciplines based on their educational background or career focus. Preparation for the FE exam requires a thorough review of core engineering concepts, and many candidates utilize study guides, practice tests, and review courses to ensure success.
