Web Development Courses

Build websites and web apps end to end - front-end interfaces, back-end services, and everything that ships to a browser

Web development has the shortest fashion cycle in software and the longest-lived fundamentals, and most course catalogues are organised by the fashion. A framework that dominated hiring five years ago is now a maintenance skill; the request-response cycle it was built on has not changed since the nineties. Spending your first six months on the layer that rotates is the reliable way to feel perpetually behind.

Two layers, two different lifespans

The durable layer is the platform: HTML semantics, CSS layout, how JavaScript executes, what the browser does between a click and a paint, how a request reaches a web server and what comes back. Learn it once and it pays for a career. The seasonal layer is the toolchain: the current front-end framework, the current bundler, the current styling approach, the current meta-framework. It matters for employability right now and will be replaced. A sensible split is most of your early time on the platform and enough of the current toolchain to ship something real.

  • Check the major version in the syllabus against the framework's current release. A React course still teaching class components, or a Redux course from before the framework absorbed most of what Redux did, teaches patterns that now produce warnings.
  • Look for the words that date a course: a bundler nobody starts new projects with, a state library the framework has since made unnecessary, jQuery presented as the way to touch the DOM.
  • Platform courses age far more slowly. A good course on HTTP, accessibility or CSS layout from a few years ago is usually still correct.

Build something with a real address

The difference between people who finish web courses and people who get hired is a deployed URL. Put the project on the public internet with its own domain and a certificate, and you immediately meet the half of the job that tutorials skip: DNS, TLS, caching, why it works locally and not in production. The hosting guide covers where to put it, and the programming page covers how the layers fit together.

Accessibility is not an advanced topic

Semantic markup, keyboard operation and contrast are cheap while you are learning and expensive to retrofit. They are also increasingly a legal requirement for commercial sites in the EU, which makes them a hiring signal rather than a nicety.

Concepts behind this area

Programming & Web Development

Object-Oriented Programming (OOP)

Object-oriented programming is a way of organising a program as objects, each holding its own data and the operations allowed on it, with classes as the templates objects are made from, so that the code models the things it is about rather than the steps the computer takes.

Programming & Web Development

Data Structures and Algorithms

Data structures are the ways a program arranges data in memory (arrays, lists, hash tables, trees, graphs) and algorithms are the step-by-step procedures that work on them; together they decide whether an operation takes a millisecond or an hour as the data grows.

Programming & Web Development

Python

Python is a general-purpose programming language that became the standard interface for driving numerical and machine-learning code written in other languages.

Hosting & Infrastructure

Caching

Caching keeps the result of expensive work, such as a rendered page or a database query, and serves that stored copy until it expires, making it the largest single source of speed on any busy website.

Hosting & Infrastructure

Uptime & SLA

Uptime is the proportion of time a service answers requests, quoted in nines, and a service level agreement is the contract clause setting out how that proportion is counted and what the provider owes when it falls short.

Hosting & Infrastructure

Shared Hosting

Shared hosting puts your website on a machine that is simultaneously running hundreds of other people's, pooling its processor, memory and disk between all of you, which is both why it costs so little and why your speed partly depends on strangers.

Frequently asked

Which framework should I learn?
Whichever the jobs you want ask for, and only after you can build a page without one. In 2026 that is usually React, with Vue and Svelte as the alternatives to know exist. The framework is a few weeks of study on top of the platform; the platform is the part that takes months and transfers when the framework changes.
Front-end, back-end or full-stack?
Start on the side that interests you and learn enough of the other to be useful. 'Full-stack' as a first target usually produces someone shallow on both; it is a description of experienced developers more often than a starting point.
Do I still need to learn CSS properly with AI assistants around?
Yes, and if anything more. Assistants generate plausible CSS quickly, and debugging plausible CSS you do not understand is slower than writing it yourself. Layout is a model in your head, not a snippet.
Is a bootcamp-style long course better than several short ones?
It is better at keeping you moving and worse at depth. The common trap is a sixty-hour course that covers everything once. Pair one broad course with a project that forces you to look things up.
Should I learn TypeScript from the start?
After JavaScript, and soon after. Most professional front-end work is written in it now, most courses teach it alongside React, and the types are a learning aid rather than an obstacle once the basics of JavaScript are in place.

Why Learn Web Development?

From a first HTML page to production full-stack applications: modern JavaScript and TypeScript, frameworks like React, Vue, and Angular, back-end work with Node and friends, plus APIs, authentication, and deployment. The largest single skill cluster in the catalog, with courses at every level.
