Microsoft built C# for its .NET platform, and it has since spread well beyond Windows: web back ends on ASP.NET Core, cross-platform services and the scripts of nearly every Unity game. Developers coming from Java feel at home within days. What surprises people is how open it has become, with an open-source compiler and runtime that run on Linux and macOS.
