Android's preferred language runs on the JVM and calls existing Java code directly, so teams can migrate an app one file at a time. JetBrains, the company behind IntelliJ IDEA, created Kotlin, and its concise syntax removes much of Java's ceremony. Newcomers often assume it is only for phones, yet server-side Kotlin and code shared across platforms are growing uses of their own.
