Once an application runs as dozens of containers across several machines, something has to schedule them, replace the ones that fail, route traffic and roll out updates; Kubernetes, born from Google's experience of running containers, is that something. Platform and DevOps engineers operate it, usually as a managed cloud service. Small teams often adopt it too early, taking on its operational weight before needing its scale.
