Nearly every server, cloud instance, container and Android phone runs the Linux kernel, the open-source core maintained by a worldwide community and published at kernel.org. What people call Linux is usually a distribution, such as Ubuntu, Debian or Red Hat Enterprise Linux, that bundles the kernel with tools and a package manager. Administrators, developers and security staff all need its command line.
