Much of the web's first generation ran on the LAMP stack, and MySQL was its M; WordPress and countless PHP applications still default to it. Oracle owns MySQL today, while MariaDB continues as a community fork. Web developers and hosting administrators meet it constantly. Starting is easy, but replication, backups and character sets are where production installations tend to go wrong.
