Before Node.js, JavaScript lived only in the browser; this runtime took Chrome's V8 engine and made it run servers, command-line tools and the build systems behind modern front ends. Back-end developers pick it when one language across the whole stack matters. Its single-threaded event loop serves many waiting connections cheaply but stalls on heavy computation, the design trade-off worth understanding first.
