Behind WordPress, Laravel and a large share of hosted websites sits PHP, a scripting language built for generating web pages on the server. Freelancers, agency developers and anyone maintaining a CMS meet it constantly. Its reputation still suffers from the loose code of its early years, yet current PHP has types, a fast engine and a mature package ecosystem in Composer.
