Statisticians built R for statistics, and it shows: models, tests and publication-quality graphics are one function call away, with thousands of contributed packages on CRAN. Researchers, biostatisticians and analysts in academic and pharmaceutical settings favour it. Programmers often find it odd as a general-purpose language, which misses its purpose; for exploratory statistical work it remains hard to beat.
