Financial Modeling & Valuation Analyst (FMVA®)
Finance degrees teach what a discounted cash flow is. The FMVA teaches you to build one in Excel that a manager can audit, change and trust, and then to build the three linked statements it depends on.
It is a private provider's certificate, earned online at your own pace, and its value lies in the skill rather than in the letters.

A workshop credential
Corporate Finance Institute is a commercial training company, and the FMVA is its flagship programme. It does not claim to be a professional body's qualification, and it should not be read as one. What it offers instead is a practical curriculum aimed at the analyst's actual deliverables: a three-statement model that balances, a forecast with clear assumptions, a DCF and a set of comparables, scenario and sensitivity analysis, and the charts and slides that carry the result to a decision-maker.
The route has five steps. Nine prep courses are optional. Fifteen core courses are required, running from financial analysis fundamentals and modelling guidelines through three-statement modelling, operational modelling and DCF valuation to dashboards, pitchbooks and a short ethics course. You then choose at least three of twelve electives, may attempt optional case-study challenges, and sit a final exam with a 70 % pass mark. CFI says most learners finish in 100 to 120 hours.
- Suits analysts in FP&A, corporate development or banking who inherited models they cannot fully explain.
- Suits accountants moving toward valuation or planning work, as a practical complement to exam-based study.
- Suits less someone who needs a regulated or chartered credential: this is a skills certificate, not a licence.
Where the hours go
| Skill area | CFI's weighting |
|---|---|
| Financial modelling | 35 % |
| Accounting | 20 % |
| Valuation | 15 % |
| Financial planning and analysis | 10 % |
| Excel | 8 % |
| Data visualisation | 7 % |
| Qualitative business analysis | 5 % |
The weighting is honest about the programme's centre of gravity. More than a third is modelling, and accounting is the second pillar, because a model can be no better than the statements it links. Valuation matters, but less than its place in the title suggests. Excel as such is a small share: CFI assumes you will learn the spreadsheet through the modelling rather than as a separate subject.
You buy a membership, not a certificate
The FMVA is only available inside CFI's annual all-access membership, which also includes its other certifications. The membership auto-renews each year unless you switch it off. The certificate itself does not expire, so a learner who finishes within the first year and cancels keeps the credential and loses only the course access.
The final exam is the only assessed step, and CFI publishes little about it beyond the 70 % pass mark: the pages read give no question count, time limit, number of attempts or description of supervision. Treat the courses rather than the exam as the substance. The practical measure of success is whether you can open a blank workbook and produce a three-statement model, a DCF and a sensitivity table that a colleague can follow, and the case-study challenges are the closest the programme comes to testing that. A learner who skips them earns the same certificate and learns noticeably less.
What a question looks like
Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.
Your three-statement model balances in the base case but the balance sheet goes out by a small amount whenever you raise the revenue growth assumption. Cash is the plug for the balance sheet. Where do you look first?
The imbalance only appears under change, so it is a linkage error, not an input error. The model rewards tracing how a growth driver flows through working capital, interest and the cash flow statement, and checking which of those links is hard-coded rather than calculated.

How much preparation, from where you are
- Finance graduate who has never built a model from scratch
- The core courses are the point. CFI's own estimate of 100 to 120 hours is realistic if you build every model rather than watch it built.
- Accountant
- The accounting courses will be quick. Invest the saved time in operational modelling and DCF, where the new skills are.
- Working analyst who already models daily
- Much of the core will be revision. The certificate mostly formalises what you do; weigh whether the letters are worth a year's membership.
What passing this does not prove
- Your work under supervised exam conditions; CFI's pages do not describe how the final exam is invigilated.
- Regulation, ethics or professional standards beyond a one-hour course.
- Any accounting framework in depth; accounting is taught as the input to a model.
- Judgement about which assumptions are reasonable for a real business, which only experience teaches.
Against the alternatives
- CFA® Program Level I
- Level I tests the theory of valuation and markets under proctored conditions; FMVA trains the spreadsheet craft. The two fit together: Level I is the heavier signal, FMVA the more immediately usable skill.
- Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Associate (Microsoft 365 Apps) (MO-210)
- The Microsoft Excel exam certifies the tool, proctored and vendor-neutral about finance. FMVA certifies the finance built in the tool. Take the MOS exam first only if Excel itself is shaky.
- Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300)
- Power BI Data Analyst is for building reports on data; FMVA is for building financial forecasts and valuations. An FP&A analyst can use both, but they answer different questions.
Financial Modeling & Valuation Analyst (FMVA®) — quick answers
How much does the FMVA cost?
It is sold only as part of CFI's annual membership, which includes all its certifications. The cost table lists the tiers read on the reading day; CFI shows them at a discount and bills yearly.
How long does it take?
CFI says most learners finish in 100 to 120 hours. At eight to ten hours a week that is three to six months, which fits within one year's membership.
Does the FMVA expire?
No. CFI states that its certifications need no renewal fee and remain valid for life. Only access to the courses ends if you stop the membership.
Is the FMVA recognised by employers?
CFI presents it as recognised across FP&A, banking and corporate development, and says NASBA recognises its courses for continuing education. It is a training provider's certificate, not a regulated qualification, and interviewers will test the skill directly.
