Fundamentals of Digital Marketing
For years this was the Digital Garage certificate that half the internet put on LinkedIn. It still exists, but in a different shape: a rebuilt course on Google Skillshop, seventeen modules and about forty hours, ending in a digital award rather than an exam.
It costs nothing. It also proves less than it used to, and that is worth understanding before you spend forty hours on it.

How to prepare
1. The programme
The certificate is earned inside this programme. Its facts, price and the provider's own page are on the course page; the link there carries no commission.

What changed when Digital Garage closed
Google retired the Digital Garage platform in 2025, warning users in February and March to download their old certificates before it went offline. The course was rewritten and moved to Skillshop, Google's training platform for its advertising and business products. Three changes matter to anyone deciding whether to take it now. There is no longer a final assessment: completing every module generates the award. The award is a digital badge in your Skillshop profile, not a formal certificate, and Google's help pages state plainly that it carries no Google logo. And old Digital Garage certificates cannot be reissued, so anyone who relied on one for proof is directed to take the new course.

If you have read elsewhere that this certificate is accredited by an outside body, check the source's date. Nothing on the current course page or the Skillshop help pages names any accrediting partner, so we do not repeat that claim. Read the award as what Google says it is: proof that you completed a Google course.
Worth forty hours?
As learning, yes, for the right person. The modules cover strategy, understanding online customers, content, data, social media, search, websites and apps, online shops, international and local reach, choosing channels for a budget, email, video and Google's marketing tools. The longest module, on matching channels to budget, is the most practical. Small-business owners and people curious about marketing as a career get a clear map of the field at no cost.
- Take it to find out whether marketing interests you before paying for a longer programme.
- Take it if you run a small business and want an ordered overview of the channels.
- Do not take it expecting the award to impress recruiters on its own; without an exam it proves attendance, not knowledge.
- Replace an old Digital Garage certificate with the new award only if someone actually asks for proof.
How the course is laid out
Skillshop splits the modules into two groups. The core concepts come first: a welcome module, strategy, customers, content, data, social media and search. A second group lets you build knowledge in areas that suit your situation: websites and apps, online shopping, international and local customers, channel choice on a budget, email, video and Google's marketing tools. Two short optional pieces bracket the course, a profile quiz at the start and a tool finder at the end. Every activity must be fully completed for the award to appear, including in-course questions, so skipping ahead does not work. Once complete, the award sits under your Skillshop profile, where it can be printed to PDF or shared to LinkedIn. Skillshop shows the course as published in January 2025, which makes it the most current version of this material Google has offered.
What a question looks like
Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.
A local bakery with a small budget wants more weekday lunch customers. It has a website nobody visits, an unclaimed business listing on maps, and an owner who posts on social media occasionally. Which two actions would you do first, and why those?
The course has no exam, so this is the kind of judgement its modules build rather than test. Beginners reach for advertising; the course's local and budget modules lead toward the cheapest steps that reach nearby customers first.

How much preparation, from where you are
- Curious beginner
- The intended learner. Spread the forty hours over several weeks and do the exercises rather than clicking through.
- Small-business owner
- Prioritise the budget, local and search modules; they apply directly to your business.
- Working marketer
- Mostly familiar. Skim for the newer AI and video material; the award adds little to your profile.
What passing this does not prove
- Anything at all under exam conditions; the award follows module completion.
- Hands-on campaign management in Google Ads or any other platform.
- Measuring results with real data.
- Specialist depth in any single channel.
Against the alternatives
- Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate
- Google's paid Coursera programme: longer, hands-on in several tools, and it covers running an online shop. Take the free course first to test your interest, then decide whether the paid one is worth it.
Fundamentals of Digital Marketing — quick answers
Is Google's Fundamentals of Digital Marketing still free?
Yes. The course and its completion award are free on Google Skillshop with a Google account.
Is there still a final exam?
No. Since the move to Skillshop, completing every module generates the award. There is no separate assessment.
What happened to my Digital Garage certificate?
Google retired the platform in 2025 and says old certificates cannot be reissued. Completion data that migrated appears as an award in your Skillshop profile; otherwise Google recommends taking the new course.
Is it accredited?
The current course and help pages name no accrediting body, and the award carries no Google logo. Treat it as a record of completing a Google course.
How long does it take?
Skillshop lists about forty hours across seventeen modules, two of them optional. You can go at your own pace.
