Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate
Google's paid marketing programme covers more ground than its title suggests: strategy, search, social, email, measurement, then building and running an online shop and keeping its customers.
Seven subject courses, paid monthly on Coursera, with hands-on work in tools from several vendors, not only Google's. Completing the courses earns the certificate.

How to prepare
1. The programme
The certificate is earned inside this programme. Its facts, price and the provider's own page are on the course page; the link there carries no commission.
Affiliate disclosure: the course link above is an affiliate link — buying through them may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. The vendor's learning path and booking links carry no commission.
The e-commerce half is the differentiator
There is no shortage of free introductions to digital marketing, including Google's own Fundamentals of Digital Marketing. What sets this programme apart is the second half: setting up a store, managing orders and fulfilment, analysing store performance, and building loyalty after the first sale. For someone aiming at a marketing assistant role in a retailer or a small online brand, that is the part free courses rarely teach, and it is why the subscription can be worth paying.
A tool tour, not a tool mastery
The page lists nine platforms, among them Google Ads, Google Analytics, HubSpot, Mailchimp, Shopify and Canva. That breadth is useful for orientation: after the programme you will know what each class of tool is for and will not freeze when a job advert names one. It is not depth. None of the tools is taught to the level of its own vendor certification, and interfaces change often enough that screen-by-screen instructions age quickly. Google's own Skillshop certifications for Ads and Analytics, and the vendors' academies, are where platform depth lives.
- Choose this programme if you want a structured path, e-commerce operations, and portfolio items such as personas and content calendars.
- Choose the free Fundamentals course if you only need an overview of marketing channels and a completion badge.
- Add platform certifications afterwards for whichever tools your target employers use.
| Course | Coursera estimate | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Foundations of Digital Marketing and E-commerce | 12 hours | Roles, the customer journey, strategy |
| Attract and Engage Customers with Digital Marketing | 14 hours | Search, SEO and paid search basics |
| From Likes to Leads | 21 hours | Social media marketing and paid social |
| Think Outside the Inbox: Email Marketing | 19 hours | Email campaigns and automation |
| Assess for Success: Marketing Analytics and Measurement | 18 hours | Metrics, dashboards, presenting results |
| Make the Sale | 15 hours | Building and running an online store |
| Satisfaction Guaranteed | 15 hours | Loyalty, retention, customer service online |
The headline figure is over 190 hours spread across half a year; the individual course estimates total nearer 120. The analytics course is the one that rewards extra time, because measuring results is where junior marketers are most often weakest and where SEO and campaign work become defensible.
Portfolio pieces and a note on search
The programme asks you to produce working documents such as customer personas and social media calendars, which the page suggests showing to employers. They are worth doing properly: base the personas on a real business you can observe, and build the calendar around actual products and dates rather than placeholders. The page also notes that the programme contains no confidential information and that the search features it teaches are publicly documented by Google. That is a useful corrective to a common hope. Taking a Google course gives no inside knowledge of how search ranking works; it teaches the same public guidance anyone can read. The value lies in the structure and the practice, not in privileged access, and that is true of every course Google offers on its own products.
What a question looks like
Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.
A small online shop spends most of its budget on social ads that bring many visitors but few purchases, while a modest email list converts well. The owner wants to double the ad budget before the holidays. What would you look at first, and what might you recommend instead?
Traffic looks like success. The programme's analytics and email courses reward comparing channels on outcomes rather than volume, and making a recommendation the owner can act on.

How much preparation, from where you are
- New to marketing
- The intended learner. Take the analytics course slowly; it underpins everything else.
- Running social media for a small business already
- The social course will be quick. The e-commerce and measurement courses are where you gain.
- Working marketer
- Mostly overview. Platform certifications in your own tools will add more.
What passing this does not prove
- Managing real ad budgets and the consequences of spending them badly.
- Any single platform at the depth of its vendor's own certification.
- Brand strategy or creative work beyond the basics.
- Knowledge under proctored exam conditions.
Against the alternatives
- Fundamentals of Digital Marketing
- Google's free marketing course with a completion award. Shorter and broader on channels, silent on running a shop. Start there to see whether marketing suits you, then pay for this programme if it does.
- Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate
- For marketers who find the measurement course the most interesting, the analytics programme is the natural sideways step into data work.
Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate — quick answers
What is the difference from Google's free digital marketing course?
The free Fundamentals course gives a channel overview and a completion award. This programme is longer, paid, hands-on with multiple tools, and covers running an online store and retaining customers.
Does it include Google Ads certification?
No. Google Ads is one of the tools used, but Google's Ads certifications are separate and run on Skillshop.
What does it cost?
It is billed as a Coursera subscription, month by month, after the free week. Learners who cannot afford it can apply for aid on the programme page; the amount is in the typed cost rows.
Is it recognised by employers?
It is well known, and Google runs an employer consortium in some countries. Recruiters still look mostly for campaign results and tool experience, so build the portfolio pieces properly.
