Google UX Design Professional Certificate
In design hiring nobody asks for a certificate; they ask for a portfolio. Google's UX programme is honest about that, because its end product is three case studies built in Figma, from interviews and wireframes to a tested prototype.
Eight courses on Coursera under a monthly subscription, and the certificate follows once the projects and graded work are complete.

How to prepare
1. The programme
The certificate is earned inside this programme. Its facts, price and the provider's own page are on the course page; the link there carries no commission.

A certificate in a field that ignores certificates
User experience design has no gatekeeping exam. There is no equivalent of Security+ or CAPM that recruiters filter for, and none on our list of paid exams to compare with. What design managers read is the case study: the problem, the research, the decisions, what failed in testing and what changed. That makes this programme unusual among Google's set. The credential itself is the least valuable thing it produces; the three projects are the product, and they are only as good as the thinking you put into them.

Where learners fall short
- Research by assumption. Interviewing two friends produces a case study that experienced reviewers see through at once. Recruit people who are not like you.
- Identical projects. Every learner works from the same course prompts. Change the brief to a problem you know and the portfolio stops looking generic.
- Skipping the failures. Reviewers want to see what testing overturned. A case study where every decision was right is less credible, not more.
- Stopping at Figma polish. Visual finish is the easiest part to judge and the least important for a UX role.
The page promises upward of 200 hours over roughly six months, while the listed course times total a little over a hundred. The difference is project work, and it is where most learners spend their extra weeks. Portfolio projects expand to fill whatever time you allow, so set yourself a scope before starting each one.
Who it suits
Career changers from adjacent work, support, content, research, front-end development, gain the most because they bring domain knowledge the projects can draw on. Graphic designers will find the visual courses easy and the research courses the real education. For anyone expecting the certificate to open doors by itself, the programme will disappoint; for anyone expecting a structured way to produce a first credible portfolio, it delivers.
The programme FAQ also mentions AI material: using it to iterate on design ideas and to draft copy for a portfolio website. Use it for speed on the parts that do not carry your thinking, such as placeholder text, and keep the research synthesis and design decisions your own, since that reasoning is what reviewers are reading for. A case study that shows how you weighed two options and why one lost is worth more than any amount of polished text around it, and no generator can supply that part of the work for you.
What a question looks like
Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.
Five usability test participants all complete a checkout task, but three hesitate for several seconds on the delivery-options screen and one mutters that the prices seem to change. Nobody reports a problem when asked afterwards. What goes into your findings, and what would you change?
Task success and the post-test answers suggest nothing is wrong. The programme's project reviews reward observing behaviour rather than trusting self-reports, and turning a hesitation into a concrete design change.

How much preparation, from where you are
- No design background
- The intended learner. The research courses teach the most; resist rushing to the visual work.
- Graphic or visual designer
- Figma and layout will be easy. Invest the time in interviewing, synthesis and usability testing.
- Front-end developer
- The responsive web course will be revision. Your advantage is building prototypes that behave realistically.
What passing this does not prove
- Research with real users at scale; the studies are small and self-organised.
- Working inside a product team with engineers, deadlines and trade-offs.
- Design systems in depth or component work at production quality.
- Anything under supervised exam conditions; the projects are assessed online, not in a proctored sitting.
Against the alternatives
- Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate
- The sister programme for people who want to grow an audience rather than shape a product. Choose UX if you enjoy watching users struggle and fixing why; choose marketing if you enjoy measuring campaigns.
- Google Project Management Professional Certificate
- A route into coordinating product work rather than designing it. Some career changers weigh the two; the UX programme demands more creative output, the project programme more documentation.
Google UX Design Professional Certificate — quick answers
Is the Google UX Design certificate enough to get hired?
The certificate is not what gets you hired; the portfolio is. Reviewers read case studies, so the three projects and how you present your reasoning decide the outcome.
Do I need to be able to draw?
No. Sketching is used for quick ideas and Figma does the rest. Clear thinking about users matters far more than drawing skill.
What does it cost?
Whatever Coursera charges per month in your country, multiplied by how long your projects take. Aid can be requested on the programme page, and the cost rows show the North American rate.
Which design tool does it use?
Figma for the digital design work, alongside paper sketches for early ideas.
Is there a UX exam I should take afterwards?
No single exam dominates UX hiring. Spend the effort on a fourth portfolio project from your own field rather than another credential.
