Azure Solutions Architect Expert asks you to turn a set of business requirements into a design: identity, data, infrastructure and continuity, chosen together rather than one at a time.
Unlike most exams on this site it has a genuine prerequisite. You must already hold the Azure Administrator certificate, and there is no way to sit this one without it.

Case studies dominate. A scenario runs to several screens, describing an organisation with existing commitments, a compliance obligation and a budget, and then asks a series of questions about it. Options are rarely wrong so much as differently wrong: one costs more, one couples two systems that should stay separate, one meets the requirement but not the recovery objective buried in paragraph three. Reading carefully matters more than knowing another service.
The design weighting leans hardest toward infrastructure and continuity, with identity and governance close behind and data solutions carrying real weight of its own. That balance surprises administrators who expected more compute and less about who is allowed to do what. Labs can appear, and when they do the sitting is extended rather than shortened.
How the marks divide

Notice that the smallest share is the one most often decisive in a case study. A recovery objective appears in one sentence of a long scenario, and half the options quietly fail it. Administrators arriving from the prerequisite exam are used to questions that test one service at a time; here the same question tests whether you carried a constraint from page one to page four. Practise on full case studies under the clock, and read each one as a brief before looking at any question attached to it.
A prerequisite that changes the economics
Two certificates, two annual renewals
Because Administrator is required and both certificates expire after twelve months, holding this one means two free renewal assessments a year rather than one, each available only in its own six-month window. Nobody mentions this when selling the climb. It is not expensive, but it is two more dates to miss, and missing either means paying full price for a proctored exam you have already passed.
Against the AWS professional architect
- Entry. AWS enforces no prerequisite; here the Administrator certificate is mandatory and there is no waiver for experience.
- Length. Three hours and 75 questions there against 100 minutes and roughly 40 to 60 here, extended when labs appear.
- Validity. Three years there against twelve months here, offset by a free renewal assessment that AWS does not offer at any tier.
- Price. A single global figure there; here the fee is set by the country where you sit, hence the two currencies in the cost table.
- Difficulty. The AWS paper is widely reckoned the harder sitting; this one is reckoned the harder ladder, because of the certificate underneath it.
Nine exam languages, German among them, sat at Pearson VUE, a scaled 700 to pass, and no retirement date announced. Microsoft additionally expects advanced experience across networking, virtualisation, identity, security, continuity, data platforms and governance, with administration, development and DevOps practice behind it, and that list is a fair description of what the case studies assume you have already done. The certificate is the one an Azure shop reads as evidence that you can be handed a blank subscription and a set of requirements; the administrator certificate beneath it is the one that says you can run the result.
What a question looks like
Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.
A manufacturer must keep production data within one country, tolerate the loss of a single datacentre without downtime, and restore a full environment within four hours after a regional failure. Its budget will not stretch to an active second region. Which combination of availability zones, backup and recovery meets all three requirements?
Each requirement on its own has an obvious answer and the three together do not. Zone redundancy handles the datacentre, residency removes the convenient second region, and the recovery objective is the only thing distinguishing two remaining options that both look affordable. The exam is testing whether you can carry every constraint through to the end rather than solving the first one you recognised.

How much preparation, from where you are
- You hold the Administrator certificate and design occasionally
- The intended candidate. The work is learning to argue for a design rather than configure one, and the governance and data sections usually need the most attention because they belong to other people day to day.
- You architect on another cloud
- The reasoning transfers and the prerequisite does not. You will still need the Administrator certificate first, which for an experienced architect is an annoying but short detour.
- You administer Azure but have never designed anything
- The gap is bigger than the tier suggests. Case studies reward having been in the room when a trade-off was argued, and no amount of portal familiarity substitutes for that.
What passing this does not prove
- Implementation. Nothing here asks you to build what you designed.
- Whether your design would survive its first year, which is the only test that matters commercially.
- Negotiating requirements, though every case study assumes somebody already did.
- Cost modelling in any depth beyond choosing the cheaper of two workable options.
Against the alternatives
- SAP-C02 — AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional
- The AWS professional architect is a harder exam by most accounts and has no prerequisite. Do not treat the two as interchangeable on a CV simply because both say architect.
- AZ-104 — Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate
- Required before this, and worth holding on its own merits. If you are unsure whether to climb, note that stopping here costs one annual renewal instead of two.
- AZ-400 — Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert
- The other Microsoft expert paper, reachable from the same prerequisite. It answers how software reaches production where this answers how the platform is shaped.
AZ-305 — quick answers
Can I skip the Administrator certificate?
No. Unlike most exams covered here, this one enforces a prerequisite: the Azure Administrator Associate certification must be current before you can claim this one. Experience does not substitute for it, however much of it you have.
How long are the case studies?
Long enough that reading is a skill being tested. A scenario can run several screens before the first question, and you can return to it while answering. Rehearsing against the clock pays off more at this level than at the associate one.
Does it expire annually too?
Yes, and so does the prerequisite underneath it, which means two renewal windows to track. Both assessments are free and unproctored, and both open only in the final six months before their own expiry date.
What if the Administrator certificate lapses while I hold this one?
Renew it. The prerequisite has to be current for this certificate to be claimed, and letting the lower one expire while keeping the upper one current is not a state Microsoft's programme is designed for. Treat the two renewal windows as one obligation with two dates.
Do labs always appear?
No. Microsoft says labs are possible rather than certain, and when they are included the sitting runs to 120 minutes instead of 100. Prepare as though they will appear: a case study you can reason through and a portal you cannot navigate is the combination that fails.
