Every large cloud provider sells an entry exam. Oracle gives its away. The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Foundations Associate is a proctored vendor certification with no fee, a free learning path and a sixty-minute online sitting.
That makes it the cheapest real cloud certificate available, and it is worth being clear about what the price does and does not change.

A proper exam at no cost
Most free credentials on this site are course badges earned by passing a quiz nobody watches. This one is different. You sit it on Oracle's learning platform with your webcam on, a proctoring extension running in the browser and a government ID that must match your profile name. It is multiple choice and takes sixty minutes. The score lands in Oracle's certification system, and the credential that follows is the same one a paying customer would hold. Oracle has made this a standing policy rather than a campaign: its announcement of the 2026 release says every Foundations course and certification stays free, and names no end date.

What you actually learn
The free path, taught by the Oracle University executive who helped launch the platform, covers Oracle's regions and availability domains, compartments and identity and access management, virtual cloud networks with routing, network security and load balancers, compute instances and scaling, Kubernetes and serverless functions, the storage family from object storage to block and file volumes, security services such as Cloud Guard and key vaults, and finally pricing, tagging and cost management. A two-hour hands-on lab lets you build some of it in a real tenancy, and there is a practice exam before the real one.
Much of that syllabus is generic cloud knowledge wearing Oracle's names. A virtual network, an object store and a key vault work in similar ways on every major platform, so the concepts transfer even if the product names do not. What does not transfer is the market position. Oracle's cloud is a serious platform with a smaller share of job adverts than the two largest providers, and its certificates are most valuable in organisations that already run Oracle databases or applications.
- Take it if your employer runs Oracle workloads or is moving them to Oracle's cloud.
- Take it as a free rehearsal of a proctored online exam before you pay for another vendor's.
- Take it if you want a cloud certificate and money is the obstacle; nothing else at this level costs nothing.
- Look further if you are choosing one entry certificate for the general job market; the AWS and Azure equivalents are named in job adverts more often.
The year has left the name, not the code
From the 2026 release Oracle drops the calendar year from certification titles, so you earn the Foundations Associate rather than a dated edition. The exam code still ends in the edition year, and the credential still expires after twenty-four months. Study material that targets an older code covers an older syllabus.
Booking is simpler than for most vendor exams. There is no separate registration or scheduling step: from the learning path you open the exam, run Oracle's readiness check, install the proctoring extension and begin. The result goes to Oracle's certification system, where the credential appears once you pass.
What a question looks like

A team needs the application servers in a cloud network to download operating-system updates from the internet, but nothing on the internet should be able to open a connection to those servers. Which gateway should the private subnet route through?
Several gateways sound plausible and one of them would expose the servers. The question rewards knowing which gateway allows outbound connections only, and it is typical of a paper that tests whether you can map a plain-language requirement to the right network component.

How much preparation, from where you are
- You are new to cloud computing
- The path is short, but the networking section will take longer than its share of the hours. Use the lab; building a network once makes the exam questions far easier to picture.
- You hold an AWS or Azure entry certificate
- Most concepts carry over. Your work is learning Oracle's names and its compartment model, and the practice exam will show quickly where the differences lie.
- You administer Oracle databases
- The cloud infrastructure will be the new part; the pricing and support material may be the most useful for conversations with your organisation.
What passing this does not prove
- Any ability to design or operate a production workload on Oracle's cloud.
- Database skills, despite Oracle's reputation.
- Hands-on work: the lab is preparation, the exam is multiple choice.
- Knowledge of any other cloud provider.
Against the alternatives
- AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02)
- AWS's entry exam covers the same kind of ground on the most widely used platform, for a fee. For the general job market it carries more weight; Oracle's is free and worth sitting as well if cost is the concern or Oracle is in your organisation.
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900)
- Microsoft's fundamentals exam also never expires, which Oracle's does. Choose Azure's if your organisation is a Microsoft shop; take Oracle's alongside it at no cost if Oracle workloads matter to you.
