Envato Market review
The right model for a single, finite need. A theme is another author's code adopted for years rather than a design, and the cheapest item is rarely the cheapest decision.
One-off builds: a single WordPress theme or plugin for a site that will not be repeated, where a subscription would outlive its usefulness.

Pricing, as published on 3 October 2026
Priced per item in US dollars, set by each item's author, with no subscription. The Regular Licence covers one end product that is not sold to end users; the Extended Licence covers an end product that is sold to them. One licence cannot be reused across several clients or jobs. Item support is time-limited and can be extended at purchase; its duration was not readable on 2026-10-03.
Envato Market is the per-item half of the Envato marketplaces: ThemeForest for site themes, CodeCanyon for plugins and scripts, and the graphics, audio and video marketplaces beside them. The buyer pays once, keeps the item, and no subscription outlives the project. For a one-off build that is a cleaner fit than a library subscription.
What it costs, and what the licence covers
Prices are set per item by the authors, so the typed block above records the licence terms rather than a price list. The Regular Licence covers one end product that is not itself sold to end users: a client's website qualifies, and the buyer may charge the client for building it. The Extended Licence covers an end product that is sold, such as a theme bundled into a paid product. One licence covers one end product; a second site needs a second licence. Item support, the author's help with the item, runs for a limited period from purchase and can be extended at checkout.
A theme is a long-term commitment with a short-term price
The purchase price is the least informative figure on the page. A WordPress theme is code that has to survive years of core updates, PHP version changes and plugin conflicts. When its author stops maintaining it, the buyer has adopted an orphan rather than bought a design, and the eventual migration costs many times the purchase price. The item page therefore reads best in this order: update history first, then support responsiveness, then reviews, then the demo. An item last updated eighteen months ago says something regardless of its screenshots; one updated repeatedly over three years says something better.
The multipurpose theme
The best-selling themes are usually the ones that do everything, which means they load the code for everything whether it is used or not. For a portfolio, a theme that also ships a booking system, a forum and four page builders is weight paid for in load time on every visit.
Where it is the better buy
- One finite project: buy the item, finish the site, owe nothing afterwards.
- Handing a site to a client who will maintain it: a purchased licence transfers with the end product, a rented one does not.
- Depth in a niche: ThemeForest and CodeCanyon carry WordPress inventory that curated libraries do not match.
Compared with its neighbour
| Question | Envato Market | Envato Elements |
|---|---|---|
| Payment | Once per item | Flat rate, monthly or annual |
| Ownership | The item is kept | Access while subscribed; registered items stay licensed |
| Suits | One project, one theme | Many assets across projects and media |
| Main risk | An abandoned item | Paying for unused months |
Where the site carries a business, a developer's evaluation of the item before purchase costs less than one afterwards. Where the buyer's needs are plural and varied, Envato Elements is the better fit.
Where Envato Market is the wrong choice
- A buyer who ships several projects a year with needs across media types, for whom the per-item model becomes a stream of small purchases and the subscription on Envato Elements costs less.
- A site that carries a business, bought without a developer's evaluation of the item: a well-maintained theme and an abandoned one look identical in the demo and differ in the second year.
- A product that will be sold to end users under the Regular Licence, which does not permit that use; the Extended Licence does.
- Reusing one purchased theme across several client sites on one licence, which the terms do not allow.
Envato Market: quick answers
Does one purchase cover more than one site?
No. The standard licence ties an item to a single end product. A second site means a second licence, which is worth pricing in before a theme is reused across several client builds.
What should be checked before buying a theme?
Update history before design. A theme updated regularly over years is a safer foundation than a better-looking one abandoned eighteen months ago. Then the support window and what it includes, then reviews, then the demo.
Market or Elements?
One item for one project: Market. Many items across many projects and media types: Elements. The deciding question is how many assets will be paid for over the next year, not which catalogue is larger.
The other way to buy
- Envato Elements · Agencies, freelancers and anyone shipping several projects a year, where the asset bill would otherwise be a dozen separate purchases.
The concepts behind this pick
Web Template
A web template is a pre-built layout sold as permission to use it in one end product, delivered either as flat files you adapt or as a theme wired into a content management system and its release cycle.
Stock Licence
A stock licence is the permission you buy when you download an asset, naming who may use it, inside which products, at what scale and until when, while copyright stays with whoever made it.
Design System
A design system is a versioned set of tokens, coded components and usage rules that a team builds interfaces from, so an interface decision is made once and then imported rather than redrawn on every screen.
