About This Course

A Nursing Assistant, also known as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Nursing Aide, is a healthcare professional who provides basic care to patients in hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care facilities, and other healthcare settings. Nursing assistants work under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) or licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and provide hands-on assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, grooming, dressing, feeding, and toileting. They may also take vital signs, assist with medical procedures, and observe and report changes in a patient's condition to the nursing staff.

To become a Nursing Assistant, one must complete a state-approved training program that includes classroom instruction and clinical experience. The length of the program can vary depending on the state, but typically ranges from four to twelve weeks. After completing the training program, Nursing Assistants must pass a competency exam to become certified.

Nursing Assistants play a vital role in the healthcare team and provide essential care to patients who may be unable to perform daily activities on their own. They work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and home health agencies. Nursing Assistants may also have the opportunity to specialize in areas such as geriatrics, pediatrics, or mental health, depending on their interests and career goals.

To obtain a nursing assistant job, a CNA most often needs to have at least a high school diploma, or GED, and at least some form of post-secondary nursing instruction. This can be obtained from a variety of institutions, including online schools, community colleges, trade schools, and so on. Students are then usually required to pass an examination for their certification.
