Google Ads Display Certification
Search advertising answers a question someone has typed. Display advertising interrupts someone who typed nothing, and this certification is about doing that without wasting the budget: choosing audiences, matching creative to a stage of the funnel, and letting automated bidding find the people worth paying for.
Skillshop rates it Beginner, the optional study path runs just under three hours, and the pass costs nothing.

How to prepare
1. The vendor's free learning path
Google publishes the exam objectives and a learning path free of charge — the authoritative source for scope and weighting. Open the learning path (opens in a new tab)
2. The programme
The certificate is earned inside this programme. Its facts, price and the provider's own page are on the course page; the link there carries no commission.

A different problem from Search
The mental shift matters more than any feature. On the search page intent arrives with the click; on the display network you have to infer it from who someone is and what they did before. So the syllabus spends its time on audience types, on the difference between prospecting and remarketing, and on how a campaign aimed at awareness should be judged differently from one aimed at a sale. A candidate who measures every display campaign by cost per conversion will find several questions counter-intuitive, because Google wants you to recognise that an awareness campaign has its own yardsticks.
That makes this the most useful Ads certificate for people who come to paid media from brand, design or communications rather than from performance marketing. It speaks their language of reach and message, then adds the discipline of targeting and budget.

- The course has three parts: an optional preparation section, the assessment, and an optional study section. You can go straight to the test.
- Questions are randomised and the count is not published, so a friend's account of the paper tells you little.
- It counts toward the Google Partners requirement, alongside Search, Video, Shopping ads and Apps.
Where the certificate stops
Display is where ad fraud, placements on low-quality sites and brand-safety worries live, and the course treats them lightly. It also cannot teach you to make a banner that anyone looks at. Creative quality decides most display results, and Google's answer to that problem in the syllabus is largely to let responsive formats and automation assemble the ad for you. That is sensible advice for a small advertiser and incomplete advice for a brand. Treat the certificate as proof that you understand the machinery, then learn placement exclusions and creative testing on a live account.
Pair it with Search if you are building a paid media profile; the two together cover intent and reach, which covers the bulk of what a small business hands an agency.
Getting ready without wasting the afternoon
The optional study path is just under three hours, and it is worth doing selectively rather than in full. Candidates from search should spend their time on the audience modules and on how Google recommends judging awareness and consideration campaigns, because that is where their instincts mislead them. Candidates from brand work should concentrate on bidding and budget, which is the vocabulary they will have to use with a media buyer. Skillshop also notes on the course page that Performance Planner, Google's forecasting tool, is being extended to Display; if you see questions about budget forecasting, that is the tool they have in mind.
Because the pass lasts only a year, think about why you want it before you sit it. If it is for a Partner count, the renewal is part of the job. If it is for your own learning, one pass is usually enough: the knowledge stays after the certificate lapses, and you can renew it when a role actually asks.
What a question looks like
Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.
A furniture retailer has plenty of site visitors who browse sofas but never buy. It also wants to reach people who have never heard of it. How should one display strategy serve both aims without the two audiences competing for the same budget?
The question hides two campaigns inside one brief. The right answer separates remarketing from prospecting, gives each its own goal and measure, and resists the tempting single campaign that optimises for the cheaper audience and starves the other.

How much preparation, from where you are
- Brand or communications marketer new to buying media
- The intended reader. Spend your time on audience types and bidding options; the strategy vocabulary will feel familiar.
- Search specialist adding Display
- Quick, provided you unlearn the reflex to judge everything by last-click conversions. That reflex costs most points here.
What passing this does not prove
- Designing creative that people notice.
- Brand safety and placement hygiene in any depth.
- Measuring the incremental effect of a display campaign, which is the question clients eventually ask.
- Programmatic buying outside Google's own network.
Against the alternatives
- Google Ads Search Certification
- Search is the one employers name first and the better opening move. Display adds reach once intent-based buying is understood.
- Google Ads Video Certification
- Video covers the same funnel thinking on YouTube. If your organisation makes video, Video is the more distinctive of the two.
- HubSpot Social Media Marketing Certification
- HubSpot's social certificate teaches organic reach on social platforms; Display teaches paid reach across websites and apps. They answer different budgets.
Google Ads Display Certification — quick answers
Is the Display certification worth it if I already hold Search?
Yes if you run or plan to run awareness or remarketing campaigns, and it adds to an agency's Partner count. If you only buy search traffic, it is optional.
How hard is it?
Skillshop labels it Beginner. The difficulty lies in thinking about audiences and funnel stages rather than keywords, not in technical depth.
Is the course compulsory before the test?
No. The preparation and study sections are optional; only the assessment is required for the certificate.
How often must I renew it?
Every year. Pass the current version of the assessment again before the old certificate lapses.
