Google Ads Search Certification
The Search certification is the Skillshop credential most job adverts and agency contracts mean when they say Google Ads certified. It covers planning, building and tuning campaigns on the search results page, with automated bidding at the centre.
It is free, it takes one sitting of 75 minutes, and it lapses a year later if you do not sit it again.

How to prepare
1. The vendor's free learning path
Google publishes the exam objectives and a learning path free of charge — the authoritative source for scope and weighting. Open the learning path (opens in a new tab)
2. The programme
The certificate is earned inside this programme. Its facts, price and the provider's own page are on the course page; the link there carries no commission.

Why agencies care about this one first
The quiet reason this certificate exists is the Google Partners programme. A marketing agency that wants the Partner badge has to show that enough of its staff hold current Google Ads certifications, and Search is one of the five that count. That is why an agency will pay you to sit it during working hours and why a recruiter screening for paid media roles scans for it. The certificate is therefore less a statement about you than a unit in your employer's compliance arithmetic, which is not a criticism. It simply explains why a free, unproctored test carries more weight in hiring than its difficulty would suggest.
For a freelancer or an in-house digital marketing generalist the logic is thinner. Nobody audits your badge count, and a client who has run search advertising before will judge you by the account you hand back, not by the certificate. The sitting is still worth doing once, because the syllabus forces you through bidding strategies and ad formats you might otherwise never touch.
How the assessment works
- One unproctored sitting of 75 minutes. Nobody watches you, but the timer runs from the first question and cannot be paused. Close the tab and the attempt is spent.
- 80 % to pass. Google's current pages give no figure for the number of questions, which are drawn at random, so no two sittings are likely to match.
- A day's wait after a failed attempt, with no cap on the number of tries.
- The training is optional. The assessment sits in the course as a required section; the modules before it are recommended, not enforced.
| Google Ads certification | Skillshop level label | Counts toward Partner badge |
|---|---|---|
| Search | Intermediate | Yes |
| Display | Beginner | Yes |
| Video | Beginner | Yes |
| AI-Powered Shopping ads | Beginner | Yes |
| Measurement | Intermediate | No |
Skillshop currently lists two Search courses: a 2026 edition and an older one with a longer optional study path. Both end in the same kind of assessment. Take whichever the certification hub sends you to, and expect the newer one to be the edition Google keeps current.
A proctored Professional tier exists in pilot
Google has piloted Professional certifications in Search, Display and Video that are proctored and will carry a fee. They are open only to a limited audience and are excluded from Partner badge requirements. If someone offers to sell you a Search certificate, you are looking at that tier or at a scam; the foundational one is free.
What the syllabus leans on
Expect questions that start from a business goal and ask which campaign setting, bidding strategy or ad type serves it. Smart Bidding and responsive search ads get the most attention, followed by the auction itself and the tools that estimate reach and budget. The course frames everything around Google's automation, so the answer Google prefers is often the automated option. Knowing when an experienced buyer would override that preference is exactly what the paper does not reward, and it is what separates a good account manager from a certified one.
The yearly expiry is the detail people forget. An agency's Partner status depends on certificates being current, so a lapsed Search certificate quietly stops counting on its anniversary. If you hold it for an employer, note the renewal date somewhere you will see it as soon as you pass; Skillshop reminds you, but the reminder goes to whichever address you used, which is not always the one you still read.
What a question looks like
Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.
A regional plumbing firm wants more phone enquiries during opening hours and has a fixed monthly budget. Its search campaign already records calls as conversions. Which combination of bidding strategy and scheduling best fits that goal?
Several options are defensible in practice. The question wants the one that aligns the bidding objective with the conversion the business actually values and respects the budget cap, which means reading the goal precisely rather than picking the most sophisticated-sounding strategy.
What it costs to get and to keep

| Assessment | 0 USD | free on Skillshop, as are the study modules (read 26 September 2026) |
| Yearly renewal | 0 USD | retake the current assessment before the twelve months run out; the cost is your time (read 26 September 2026) |
How much preparation, from where you are
- You manage live search campaigns
- Little preparation beyond skimming the modules on features you do not use. The trap is Google's preferred answer on automation, which may differ from your habits.
- You know marketing but have never opened Google Ads
- Work through the optional modules and, if you can, build a campaign in a real account without launching it. The vocabulary of match types and bid strategies is the main hurdle.
- You are new to marketing altogether
- Passable with the course alone, but the certificate will outrun your judgement. Pair it with a small real budget before claiming the skill.
What passing this does not prove
- Whether you can diagnose a campaign that is spending money without converting.
- Keyword research and negative keyword hygiene in any depth.
- Landing page quality, which decides most search campaigns.
- Any identity check: the sitting is unproctored, so the certificate proves a pass, not who passed.
Against the alternatives
- HubSpot Inbound Marketing Certification
- HubSpot's certificate teaches the organic side of the same buyer: content that earns attention instead of buying it. A marketer who holds both can argue for a budget split instead of defending one channel.
- Meta Certified Digital Marketing Associate (100-101)
- Meta's associate exam is paid and proctored, which makes it harder to game, and it covers social advertising instead of search intent. If an employer runs ads on both, Search is the free first step and Meta's the one that costs money.
- Google Ads Measurement Certification
- The natural second certificate. Search teaches you to spend; Measurement teaches you to prove what the spend achieved.
Google Ads Search Certification — quick answers
Is the Google Ads Search certification really free?
Yes. Skillshop charges nothing for the training or the test. The only paid Google Ads credentials are the Professional tier, which is still in a limited pilot.
How long is it valid?
Twelve months. You renew by passing the current assessment again, and after expiry you may no longer describe yourself as certified.
Is it proctored?
No. Google's foundational certifications are taken online without a proctor. The timer and the one-day wait after a failure are the only controls.
Does it help my agency become a Google Partner?
Yes, Search is one of the certifications that count toward the Partner certification requirement. Measurement and the Professional tier do not.
Should I take Search or Display first?
Search, for most people. It is the certificate employers name most often, and its logic of intent and bidding makes the other Ads certifications easier to follow.
