AI-Powered Shopping ads Certification
Google renamed its Shopping certification to put automation in the title: it is now the AI-Powered Shopping ads Certification. The substance is still retail advertising, where the product feed rather than the ad copy decides what appears, and where policy mistakes stop campaigns before they start.
Its study path, roughly an hour and a quarter, is the shortest Google offers for an Ads certificate; the test is free and valid for a year.

How to prepare
1. The vendor's free learning path
Google publishes the exam objectives and a learning path free of charge — the authoritative source for scope and weighting. Open the learning path (opens in a new tab)
2. The programme
The certificate is earned inside this programme. Its facts, price and the provider's own page are on the course page; the link there carries no commission.

The feed is the campaign
In a search campaign you write the ad. In a Shopping campaign Google writes it for you, from the titles, prices, images and attributes in your product feed, so the quality of that feed is most of the job. The certification reflects that. It spends real time on Merchant Center, on how a feed feeds the auction, and on the policy rules that decide whether products are shown at all. A candidate from a pure search background tends to lose points here, because the levers they are used to pulling are simply absent.
The second theme is campaign choice. Retailers can run standard Shopping campaigns or hand the decision to Performance Max, which spreads budget across Google's surfaces automatically. The course expects you to know what each is for and when a business goal favours one over the other. As with every Ads certificate, Google's own preference for automation is visible in which answer counts as correct.

- Policy is examined directly. Knowing which products and claims are restricted is part of the syllabus, not a footnote.
- Merchant Center is assumed. You need to understand accounts, feeds and diagnostics even if the test never asks you to click through them.
- Local inventory counts. The course covers promoting stock held in physical shops, not only online sales.
Old figures still circulate
An older Google help page from the pre-Skillshop era describes a longer Shopping assessment with a different time limit. It no longer describes this certification. Current Google Ads assessments run 75 minutes, and Google does not publish a question count.
Who should take it
E-commerce managers, marketplace sellers expanding to their own shop, and agency staff who handle retail clients. For them the certificate compresses a lot of scattered help-centre reading into one path. For anyone who does not sell physical products it is the least transferable of the Ads certifications, and Search or Measurement is a better use of the same afternoon.
Where it fits among the Ads certificates
Shopping is the specialist of the set. Search, Display and Video each describe a way of reaching people; Shopping describes a way of selling a catalogue, and it borrows from all three because Performance Max places retail ads across Google's surfaces. That makes it the natural second certificate for anyone in e-commerce, after Search, and the natural companion to Measurement, since retail is where advertisers most want to see revenue rather than clicks.
The short study path is a strength and a trap. An hour and a quarter is enough to understand the concepts, but feed quality and policy are learned by fixing real disapprovals, not by watching someone describe them. If you can, spend time in a Merchant Center account looking at diagnostics before you sit the test. The certificate then describes something you have actually done.
What a question looks like
Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.
An online shoe shop's products are approved in Merchant Center but receive almost no impressions, while a competitor with similar prices appears constantly. Budget and bids are not the constraint. Where should the shop look first?
Candidates reach for bidding because that is where search problems live. The expected answer is the feed: titles, attributes and product categories that decide which queries a product can match at all. The question rewards knowing that Shopping visibility is largely set by data quality.

How much preparation, from where you are
- You run an online shop with a Merchant Center feed
- Short. Revise the policy section and the Performance Max material, which are the likely gaps.
- You buy search ads but have never touched a product feed
- Do the optional preparation. The feed and policy vocabulary is new, and it carries a large share of the questions.
What passing this does not prove
- Building or repairing a product feed by hand or through a feed tool.
- Margin-aware bidding, which decides whether retail ads are profitable.
- Marketplaces other than Google.
- Anything about running the shop itself: pricing, stock or returns.
Against the alternatives
- Google Ads Search Certification
- Search is the broader and more requested certificate. Shopping is the specialist add-on for anyone whose client or employer sells products.
- Google Ads Measurement Certification
- Measurement explains how to prove what Shopping campaigns earned. For retail the two belong together.
AI-Powered Shopping ads Certification — quick answers
What happened to the Google Shopping certification?
It was renamed. Skillshop now lists it as the AI-Powered Shopping ads Certification; Google's Partners page still calls it Shopping ads, and it still counts toward the Partner badge.
Is it free?
Yes. Neither the Skillshop training nor the assessment carries a fee.
How many questions are there?
Google's current pages do not say. Old figures from the pre-Skillshop era are still quoted online but describe a retired version of the test.
Do I need a Merchant Center account?
Not to sit the test. Having one, even for a small catalogue, makes the feed and policy questions much easier.
