Google Ads Measurement Certification
Every Ads certificate teaches you to spend money. This one asks whether you can show what the money did: conversion tracking set up properly, Google Analytics connected, and a clear sense of when attribution answers the question and when only an incrementality test or a marketing mix model will.
It is free and Intermediate by Skillshop's label, and unlike its siblings it is left out of the Partner programme's certification count.

How to prepare
1. The vendor's free learning path
Google publishes the exam objectives and a learning path free of charge — the authoritative source for scope and weighting. Open the learning path (opens in a new tab)
2. The programme
The certificate is earned inside this programme. Its facts, price and the provider's own page are on the course page; the link there carries no commission.

Made for whoever has to answer the awkward questions
Sooner or later a finance director asks whether the advertising actually caused the sales it claims. Most account managers answer with the numbers the platform reports, which is exactly the answer a sceptic distrusts. The syllabus of this certification is built around that moment. It covers the plumbing first, meaning conversion tracking for purchases, app installs and leads, and the link between Google Ads and Google Analytics. Then it moves to the harder material: telling attribution apart from incrementality and from marketing mix modelling, and choosing the method that fits the question being asked.
That second half is what makes it worth an afternoon even for people who never touch a campaign. Analysts, marketing managers and anyone who signs off an advertising budget will recognise the problem immediately, and the course gives them the vocabulary to ask their agency better questions.
Structure and rules
- Only the assessment awards the certificate. The training modules are optional.
- A pre-survey gates the modules. You must complete it before the training opens; the assessment is listed as the first section of the course.
- Free, unproctored, 75 minutes, 80 % to pass, with the usual one-day wait after a fail.
- About two hours and forty minutes of optional study, labelled Intermediate.
| Method | Question it answers | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Attribution | Which touchpoints preceded a conversion, and how to share credit | Shows correlation along a path, not what would have happened without the ad |
| Incrementality testing | How many conversions the ads caused, against a holdout | Needs volume and discipline; answers one campaign at a time |
| Marketing mix modelling | How each channel contributes over months, including offline | Needs long history; too coarse for day-to-day optimisation |
The table is our summary of the distinction the course draws, and it is the distinction the paper most wants you to hold. Expect questions that describe a business question and ask which method answers it.
Why it does not count for Partners, and why that matters less than it seems
Google's list of certifications that satisfy the Partner requirement leaves Measurement out. Agencies optimising their badge count therefore push staff toward Search, Display, Video and Shopping first, which is why Measurement is held by fewer people. That scarcity is its value: in an interview for a performance or analytics role, it signals that you understand the proof as well as the spend. It pairs naturally with the Google Analytics Certification, which covers the analytics product in far more depth.
Preparation is best done with a real account open. Find where conversions are defined, check which of them count toward bidding, and look at how the account is linked to Analytics. Then read the optional module on attribution, incrementality and mix modelling slowly, because that material rewards understanding over recognition. Two hours and forty minutes of material is modest, and most of the value sits in that one module. If your organisation already runs experiments or a mix model through an agency, ask for a recent report and read it alongside the course; the vocabulary will stop being abstract very quickly.
What a question looks like
Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.
A retailer's reports credit paid search with most online sales, but the marketing director suspects many of those buyers would have found the shop anyway through its brand name. Which measurement approach would answer her doubt most directly?
Switching attribution models looks like an answer and is the trap: every model still divides credit among observed touchpoints. The question asks what the ads caused, which calls for an experiment with a holdout group. Recognising that difference is the core of the paper.

How much preparation, from where you are
- Analyst who knows statistics but not Google Ads
- The measurement concepts will come easily; spend time on how conversion tracking and audience features are configured in the product.
- Campaign manager
- Expect the attribution, incrementality and MMM material to take the most effort. It is where practitioners' habits and the syllabus diverge.
What passing this does not prove
- Designing and running a real incrementality experiment.
- Building a marketing mix model, or judging one built by a vendor.
- Tag implementation in code or through a tag manager.
- Data protection and consent law beyond what the product settings expose.
Against the alternatives
- Google Analytics Certification
- The Analytics certificate goes deep on one product's data model and reports. Measurement is broader across methods and narrower on the tool. Analysts benefit from both.
- Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300)
- Microsoft's Power BI exam is proctored and paid, and tests building data models and reports from any source. It is the stronger analytics credential for a data career; Measurement is the marketing-specific one.
- Google Ads Search Certification
- Search is the spend, Measurement is the proof. Take Search first if you run campaigns; take Measurement first if you judge them.
Google Ads Measurement Certification — quick answers
Does the Measurement certification count toward Google Partner status?
No. Google's help page lists Search, Display, Video, Shopping ads and Apps as the certifications that count; Measurement is not among them.
Is it harder than the other Ads certificates?
Skillshop labels it Intermediate, like Search. The difficulty lies in the concepts of attribution and incrementality rather than in product settings.
Why is there a survey before the course?
Skillshop requires a short pre-survey before the optional training modules open. It does not affect the certificate, which comes from the assessment alone.
Is it useful for someone who does not run ads?
Yes, arguably more so. Anyone who approves or audits advertising spend benefits from knowing which measurement method answers which question.
