Intuit Academy Bookkeeping Professional Certificate
Before anyone can use accounting software well, they need to know what a debit is, why a trial balance balances and where a reconciliation goes wrong. Intuit's Coursera programme teaches exactly that layer, with QuickBooks Online appearing only as the place the work is done.
Four courses, beginner level, finished by completing them rather than by sitting an exam.

The programme follows the accounting cycle rather than the software menu. It starts with the vocabulary and measurement rules of bookkeeping, then works through the balance sheet in two passes, first assets and sales, then expenses, liabilities and equity. The last course, the longest of the four, is where it all comes together: reconciling accounts and reading the statements they produce. The applied project asks you to do the job on realistic customer scenarios, recording transactions, reconciling and closing the books for several kinds of business.
| Course | Coursera's estimate | What you practise |
|---|---|---|
| Bookkeeping basics | 13 hours | Core bookkeeping concepts and how accounting measures a business |
| Tracking assets and sales | 12 hours | Recording what the business owns and the sales that bring money in |
| Tracking expenses, liabilities, and equity | 13 hours | Recording costs, obligations, payroll and the owner's stake |
| Reconciling accounts and examining financial statements | 16 hours | Matching the books to the bank, then interpreting the statements |
Two numbers that disagree, and what that means for your bill
Coursera's page gives two paces. The header suggests four weeks at ten hours a week; the FAQ describes about four months at under four hours a week. The course estimates add up to about 54 hours, which fits both. Because billing is monthly, the pace is also the price. A learner with the time to treat it as a one-month intensive pays for one or two months; someone fitting it round a job pays for four or more. Decide which you are before the free trial begins. Coursera also links a financial aid application from the programme page, and applying before the trial ends is simpler than asking for help halfway through a paid month.
- Take it if bookkeeping is new to you and you want a structured route from first principles to a reconciled set of books.
- Take it if you use QuickBooks Online already but could not explain the entries it makes on your behalf.
- Skip it if you have studied introductory financial accounting; the syllabus will be familiar and the software practice alone is available free through Intuit's own ProAdvisor training.
Certificate, exam and job: three separate things
Finishing the courses earns a Coursera certificate from Intuit, shareable on a CV, and the programme carries an ACE credit recommendation that participating US colleges may accept. It also prepares you for a separate Intuit Academy Bookkeeping exam, which Intuit offers to people in the United States only. The page is careful to add that completion guarantees no job, at Intuit or anywhere else. Outside the US, where that exam is not offered, treat the certificate as evidence of structured study and pair it with the free QuickBooks Online or Xero certification to show software skill.
What a question looks like
Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.
At month end the bank statement shows a balance higher than the cash account in the ledger. You find one deposit in transit, one cheque that has not cleared, and a bank fee not yet recorded. Which of these items require a journal entry in the books?
All three are reconciling items, but only one of them is a transaction the business has not yet recorded. Beginners adjust the ledger for timing differences that will correct themselves, which is exactly the habit the programme's graded work is designed to break.
What it costs to get and to keep
| Item | Amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Coursera subscription, per month | 39 USD | US and Canada price after the 7-day trial; the total depends on how many months you stay subscribed (read 26 September 2026) |
| Whole programme at Coursera's stated pace | 160 USD | Coursera's figure for many learners finishing in about four months (read 26 September 2026) |
| Financial aid | not published | an application route is linked from the programme page; the amount is decided per applicant (read 26 September 2026) |
| Intuit Academy Bookkeeping exam | not published | a separate exam for people in the US only; its fee is not stated on the Coursera page (read 26 September 2026) |
How much preparation, from where you are
- Complete beginner
- The intended learner. Plan extra time for the final course, the longest at 16 hours, where every earlier habit is tested at once.
- Small business owner doing your own books
- The first course may feel basic, but the reconciliation course explains the errors that are hardest to spot on your own.
- Accounting student
- Mostly revision. The software practice is the new part, and you can get that free through Intuit's ProAdvisor training.
What passing this does not prove
- Performance under supervised conditions; graded work is done at home.
- Tax, payroll law or statutory reporting in any particular country.
- QuickBooks Online beyond an introduction; the product certification is separate.
- Working with clients, which the programme does not assess.
Against the alternatives
- QuickBooks Online Certification (ProAdvisor), Level 1
- ProAdvisor certifies the software; this certificate teaches the bookkeeping underneath. Beginners should take this first; practitioners working in QuickBooks for clients need ProAdvisor either way.
- Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Associate (Microsoft 365 Apps) (MO-210)
- Microsoft's Excel exam proves spreadsheet skill under proctored conditions. It pairs well with this programme for small-business finance roles, where both skills are used every day.
