Xero Certified Associate (Level 1 Xero certification)
If you keep other people's books in Xero, the certification is less a career milestone than a working licence: Xero ties its partner programme to it, and it lapses every year.
It is free, experienced users can go straight to the assessment, and the real test is whether you keep it current.

An expired certificate is not simply renewed
Xero's rule is blunt: once a certification lapses, you lose the partner benefits linked to it, and the recertification assessment alone will not bring them back. A practice that relies on one certified person should diary the expiry date, which Xero prints on the certificate.
Xero's certification now comes in three levels, which must be taken in order. The name many bookkeepers still use, advisor certification, no longer appears on Xero's page; the entry credential is now Level 1, the Xero Certified Associate. It covers what someone new to Xero needs to set up an organisation and enter financial information correctly. Level 2, professional, moves to the harder features and period-end reporting. Level 3, specialist, covers the full advanced toolset.
Three ways in, one way to stay
- Self-paced course, for newcomers who want to learn and be tested in one sitting of study.
- Live webinar with a Xero trainer, for those who learn better with someone to ask.
- Assessment only, for experienced users who want the badge without the lessons.
- Annual recertification, a short scenario-based check for your highest level only, with an 80 % pass mark.
The choice of route matters for one reason beyond learning style: Xero awards CPD or CPE points only when the learning content and the assessment are both completed. An accountant who needs the hours should not take the assessment-only shortcut. Passing earns a digital badge and a PDF certificate showing the name, date and expiry. Both can be shared, which is how clients usually meet the credential.
Why practices care
For a firm, the certification is the key to Xero's partner programme: at least one person in the practice must hold an active Level 1 or higher to keep partner status and its benefits. Specialist badges, such as payroll, sit outside the three levels and need their own yearly recertification. Recertification now focuses on the key releases since you were last certified, while product updates arrive separately as short monthly videos and twice-yearly regional webinars. Recertification assessments for Level 1, Level 2 and the payroll badge have been live since July 2026; the Level 3 equivalent is marked as coming soon.
Xero publishes almost nothing about the first assessment itself: no question count, no time limit and no pass mark on the page read, although the recertification is described as scenario-based with an 80 % threshold. That suggests the sensible preparation for either. Rather than memorising menus, work through the tasks a bookkeeper meets each month in a demo organisation: bank reconciliation, invoices and bills, credit notes, a period-end report. An experienced user who has not done a particular task recently will find the course modules on it quicker than guessing under assessment conditions.
What a question looks like
Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.
A client's bank feed shows a single deposit that covers three customer invoices, less a card processing fee. The invoices are already in Xero. How do you reconcile the deposit so that each invoice is marked paid and the fee is recorded correctly?
Nothing about it is advanced accounting, but it tests whether you know how the software expects a split receipt to be matched. Forcing the match with a manual adjustment would balance the bank and leave the customer ledger wrong.
What it costs to get and to keep

|---|---|---|
| Learning and assessment | 0 USD | Xero states that certification is free (read 26 September 2026) |
| Annual recertification | 0 USD | one short scenario-based assessment a year for your highest level; lapse and you lose partner benefits (read 26 September 2026) |
How much preparation, from where you are
- New to Xero, familiar with bookkeeping
- Take the self-paced course; the accounting will be familiar and the learning is about where Xero puts things.
- Daily Xero user
- Assessment only will get you the badge quickly, but choose the full route if you need CPD or CPE points, which require both parts.
- Moving from QuickBooks
- The concepts carry over but the screens and terms do not; the course is the quicker route to the vocabulary the assessment uses.
What passing this does not prove
- Bookkeeping or accounting knowledge beyond what using Xero requires.
- Tax or payroll law in any country; payroll has its own specialist badge.
- Your identity or independence: the assessment is online and unsupervised as far as Xero's page describes.
- Advisory skills with clients, which the partner programme assumes rather than tests.
Against the alternatives
- QuickBooks Online Certification (ProAdvisor), Level 1
- The QuickBooks equivalent: also free, also renewed every year, also the key to a partner programme. Hold the one that matches your clients' software; practices serving both hold both.
- Intuit Academy Bookkeeping Professional Certificate
- Intuit's Coursera certificate teaches bookkeeping itself rather than a product. A newcomer to the field gains more from it; an experienced bookkeeper adopting Xero needs this one.
