Intuit certifications

Intuit, the company behind QuickBooks, certifies two different things: whether you can use its software for clients, and whether you understand bookkeeping at all. The first is a free product badge; the second is a paid course on Coursera.

  • **QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor**: product certification taken inside QuickBooks Online Accountant, free according to Intuit, renewed with a shorter exam every year.
  • **Intuit Academy Bookkeeping**: four beginner courses on the accounting cycle, billed through a Coursera subscription and finished by completing the coursework.
  • Other product badges: QuickBooks Desktop and Desktop Enterprise, Online Advanced and Workforce each have their own certification track.

The two families answer to different audiences. ProAdvisor certification belongs to Intuit's programme for accounting professionals, where it earns points toward programme tiers, a badge for marketing and a place in the directory small businesses use to find help. It is only meaningful if you serve clients who use QuickBooks, and it lapses unless you recertify each year. The Coursera certificate is aimed at people entering the field, carries no renewal and teaches principles that apply in any software.

How to read an Intuit credential

Neither is a professional qualification in the sense that a chartered or certified accountancy title is. Both are evidence of recent, practical study. The ProAdvisor badge is the more current signal because it must be renewed; the bookkeeping certificate is the broader one because it is not tied to a product. For newcomers the sensible order is bookkeeping first and the product badge second. The Coursera page also mentions an Intuit Academy Bookkeeping exam, distinct from the certificate and offered only in the US, which the Coursera programme prepares for and which this site does not treat as a record of its own.

ProAdvisor certifies the software; this certificate teaches the bookkeeping underneath. Beginners should take this first; practitioners working in QuickBooks for clients need ProAdvisor either way.
