Where each framework is spoken

PRINCE2 is a method with a home. It grew out of British government project practice, and British public bodies, their suppliers and the consultancies bidding for their work still name it in tenders and job advertisements; Dutch, Nordic and German public-sector project offices use it, and many large European corporates standardised on it when a programme office chose it years ago. At a product company in North America the letters carry little. PRINCE2 is bought when a named employer, framework agreement or tender document asks for it, not as a project-management qualification in the abstract. ITIL travels further. Any organisation with a formal service desk, a change-approval route and service levels written into contracts runs something ITIL-shaped, and recruiters use the word as a filter even where the practice is loose, which makes ITIL the safer choice for a candidate with no particular employer in view whose work sits near operations, support or infrastructure. Neither framework is a technical skill; both describe work that an organisation has already decided to organise that way, so the question before booking is whether the intended workplace speaks the language.

What a Foundation pass proves

The Foundation questions are definitional: which role signs off an exception plan, which practice owns a service request, which principle a two-line scenario illustrates. A pass shows that the holder knows what the terms mean. It does not show that the holder has chaired a change meeting or closed a stage, and a hiring manager who has worked inside the method reads it that way; Practitioner is where candidates apply the method to a case study, and the level employers who use the method ask for. Foundation is worth its price to someone joining a team that already works this way: a new analyst on a service desk, a coordinator placed in a governance structure they did not design, a career changer who needs to read a business case without stopping at the word tolerance. It is worth little as a standalone line on a CV without delivery experience behind it. The version is the other thing to settle before booking. ITIL Version 5 arrived in 2026, ITIL 4 Foundation remained on sale beside it, and a bridge module exists for ITIL 4 holders, so the employer's training plan decides which one to sit.
