Google Cloud certifications

Sit these exams if you have a target in view. An employer already running on Google Cloud, a data or analytics team built around BigQuery, a machine learning group, or a sector such as retail and media where firms deliberately buy their infrastructure somewhere other than Amazon: in all of those the badge is scarcer than an AWS one and reads louder for the scarcity. Do not start here if you are certifying to widen a job search in general, if you are new to the industry and cannot yet name the employer you want, or if you work towards the public sector and large enterprises in Germany, where Azure estates are the default and the interview you get will be an Azure interview. The platform is not the weak point in that case. The number of doors the certificate opens is, and Microsoft or AWS simply open more of them. Put plainly: Google Cloud rewards commitment to one ecosystem and punishes hedging, which is the opposite of how most people are told to pick a first cloud.

Two years of validity changes what the architect badge really costs you

• The Associate Cloud Engineer holds for three years, the same cycle AWS applies across its whole programme.
• The Professional Cloud Architect holds for two, a shorter life than almost every other credential documented on this site.
• Over six years, that difference means three renewals of the architect badge against two for a three-year peer, and the gap widens the longer you keep the credential current.
• Renewal in both cases is a shorter sitting taken before the badge lapses, or a set route of courses and skill badges instead. Google is unusual in offering that course route at all, and it is the cheaper option in money if not in hours.
• Renewal sittings cost less than a first attempt. Current figures sit with each exam record instead of here, alongside the date of our last check.

Two exams are not the ladder, and it would be dishonest to let the page imply otherwise. Google publishes considerably more than is written up here: a Cloud Digital Leader credential aimed at people who buy and govern cloud rather than build on it, professional exams covering data engineering, machine learning, security, networking, databases and DevOps, and further associate titles besides. What this site holds today is the infrastructure spine and nothing beside it. If what draws you is the data and ML work where Google holds its strongest hand in hiring, the exam you actually want is one nobody here has documented yet, and the vendor's certification index is the place to check the list. On the pair that is covered: the associate is worth sitting on its own merits for anyone who touches the platform most weeks, because it certifies the daily work and the renewal is light. The architect deserves more hesitation. It is a strong credential with a bill attached every second year, so hold it while an employer is paying for the upkeep or while you are actively trading on it in interviews, and let it lapse without ceremony when neither is true any more.
