Google Cloud certifies on three tiers: Foundational (Cloud Digital Leader), Associate (Cloud Engineer, Data Practitioner and others) and Professional (Cloud Architect, Data Engineer, DevOps Engineer, Security Engineer and more). Exams run for two hours and stay valid for two or three years depending on the tier; renewal is a shorter recertification exam or, in the final year, a set of courses and skill badges. Most exams are offered in English and Japanese. Associate Cloud Engineer and Professional Cloud Architect are the two compared below.

Google Cloud is the third of the large cloud providers by hiring volume, and for data and machine-learning teams it is often the first platform named. Its certificates are therefore a narrower proposition than the Microsoft or AWS equivalents: demand concentrates in particular teams and sectors, which favours candidates already pointed at one of them. An employer running on Google Cloud, an analytics team built around BigQuery, a machine-learning group, or a retailer or media company that deliberately buys its infrastructure away from Amazon all read the badge as scarce and specific. A general job search, a first cloud credential without a target employer, or work towards the German public sector and large enterprises, where Azure estates predominate, is better served by a Microsoft or AWS credential first. Google Cloud rewards commitment to one ecosystem more than it rewards hedging.

What a two-year validity costs

The architect credential runs on the shortest cycle of the large cloud providers' professional exams. Over six years it needs three renewals against two for a three-year credential, and the gap widens the longer it is kept current.
Renewal, for both exams, is a one-hour recertification exam (20 questions for the associate, 25 for the architect, in English or Japanese) taken before the credential lapses, or the prescribed courses and skill badges completed during the final year of validity. Google is unusual in offering the course route at all.
A renewal sitting costs less than a first attempt. Both exam pages list the fees with their as-of dates.

Two exams are not the programme. Google also publishes Cloud Digital Leader for people who buy and govern cloud rather than build on it, and professional exams in data engineering, machine learning, security, networking, databases and DevOps; the data and machine-learning exams are the ones closest to where Google's hiring position is strongest, and Google's certification index lists them all. Of the pair compared above, the Associate Cloud Engineer is worth sitting on its own merits for anyone who touches the platform most weeks, because it certifies the daily work and its renewal is light. The Professional Cloud Architect is a strong credential with a bill every second year: worth holding while an employer pays for the upkeep or while it is being used in interviews, and worth letting lapse when neither is true.
