ISTQB certifications

Non-native speakers receive 25 per cent extra time on all three. Foundation is the vocabulary of a QA team: equivalence class, boundary value, test level, risk-based prioritisation, defect lifecycle. It pays for people moving into testing from support, administration or development, for job seekers in the European markets where recruitment filters look for it, and for teams whose employer funds it and which lack a shared language for their own work. It pays little for a tester with years of visible work and a network, for a developer who wants to test better (a fortnight with property-based testing and a real bug list teaches more), or for anyone expecting a multiple-choice paper to stand in for having broken something in production and fixed it. Sittings are booked with an accredited provider, not with ISTQB, so the fee depends on the country and the provider, and a training course with the exam bundled in costs a multiple of the exam alone.

• CTFL is the entry exam and the gate to everything above it, and the only sensible starting point for a career changer.
• CTAL-TA is for the person who works out what to test, starting from specifications and product risk; it fits when that analysis is the job.
• CTAL-TAE is aimed at engineers who design and maintain automation machinery rather than executing suites by hand. It is tool-agnostic by design, which is its strength and the reason it says nothing about the holder's code.
• The rest of the scheme covers test management, the technical test analyst module, specialist certificates in agile, security, performance and AI testing, and an Expert Level; ISTQB's own site lists them with the current syllabus versions.

Lifetime validity, read from both sides

For the holder, lifetime validity means the total cost of the ladder is the sum of the sittings, with nothing afterwards. For whoever reads the CV it means less: a Foundation pass from a decade ago proves that its holder once learned a vocabulary, not that they have tested anything since. ISTQB retires old syllabus versions for new sittings while leaving the certificates already issued untouched, so two people showing the same four letters may have studied materially different content; the version and the year belong next to the credential, and anyone who knows the scheme looks for them. The practitioners' criticism of testing certification is fair as far as it goes: a multiple-choice paper rewards recall, good testers are made by curiosity and the habit of asking what else might break, and a room full of certified people can still ship a bad release. The certificate is worth holding and not worth collecting. Foundation early, while the vocabulary is new and the fee is small against what it opens; an Advanced module only when the work in front of the candidate already matches it; and currency maintained by testing things, because nothing in the scheme will ask for proof of that.
