ServiceNow certifications

ServiceNow certifies the administrators, developers and implementation specialists of its cloud platform for IT service, operations and business workflows. The entry point is the Certified System Administrator (CSA), followed by the Certified Application Developer and product-specific Implementation Specialists. In 2026 ServiceNow rebuilt its exam model: exams moved from Kryterion to Pearson VUE, vouchers gave way to entitlements unlocked in ServiceNow University, and mainline credentials remain current only through a free delta assessment after each release and a yearly maintenance fee. Exams are in English and Japanese. The CSA is the exam described below.

The CSA serves a small, well-paid market. Organisations that have standardised on the platform have put service desks, change approval, asset records and much of their internal request handling on top of it, which makes competent administrators hard to replace and easy to bill out, and implementation partners treat the certificate as a hiring gate: it lets them staff a customer engagement with certified people. Nothing in it travels. Update sets, scoped applications, the evaluation order of access controls and the behaviour of Flow Designer describe one product, and an employer running different software recognises none of it. The exam runs ninety minutes with around sixty items in multiple-choice and multiple-response form; ServiceNow publishes neither a fixed count nor the cut score. Eligibility is unlocked by completing the free on-demand Administration Fundamentals course, so study material is not the expensive part; a personal developer instance is, in time, because the questions are literal about where a thing lives in the product.

Where the exam pays back

The exam pays back quickly for someone already working on an instance, for someone joining or applying to an implementation partner, and for the person on a team whose employer has bought the platform and needs an owner for it; in the partner case the employer often carries the cost, which changes the calculation. It pays back little for a candidate shopping for a general qualification in technology, or with neither an employer nor a partner prospect in view, for whom a recurring charge on a dormant badge is a reason to let it go. ITIL Foundation is the portable alternative while a direction is still being chosen: it teaches the service-management vocabulary the platform assumes, is recognised by organisations that have never bought a ServiceNow licence, and survives a change of employer. The CSA follows once the instance to be worked on is known, budgeted as a cycle rather than a sitting.

Did the 2026 maintenance fee change whether the CSA is worth it?
It changed the arithmetic, not the assessment. Anyone working on the platform, or billing through a partner, still comes out ahead, and employers frequently carry the charge. For somebody holding the certificate without using it, an annual payment for a dormant badge is a reason to let it lapse.
What happens when a release delta is missed?
The certificate lapses. ServiceNow releases the platform twice a year and expects the short assessment inside the maintenance window attached to each release. Recovery means the whole exam again, once the fundamentals course has unlocked eligibility a second time; a late delta does not count.
What comes after the CSA?
The Certified Application Developer and a long row of Implementation Specialist certificates for ITSM, CSM, HRSD and other products, each with its own prerequisites. ServiceNow University lists them; a career on the platform usually moves to one of them next.
