ServiceNow certifications

ServiceNow certifies the administrators, developers and implementation staff who run its workflow platform. We document one exam here, the CSA, which is the gate every other certificate in the programme sits behind. The application developer track and the product-specific implementation certificates above it are outside our coverage for now.

Exam delivery: Pearson VUE (since 2026; test centre or online proctored) once the exam entitlement is unlocked in ServiceNow University

The employability case rests on a small, well-paid market rather than a broad one. Organisations that have standardised on this platform have usually put service desks, change approval, asset records and half their internal request handling on top of it, which makes competent administrators hard to replace and easy to bill out. Implementation partners, in particular, treat the CSA as a hiring gate: it is what lets them staff a customer engagement and say the work is being done by certified people. That is a real advantage and it is worth chasing if the platform is where you intend to build a career. The limit is equally real. Nothing here travels. Update sets, scoped applications, access control evaluation order and the quirks of Flow Designer describe one product, and an employer running different software will not recognise any of it as evidence you can administer their systems. The thing that has changed, and changed recently, is what it costs to keep the badge rather than to win it. Until 2026 the deal was straightforward: pass once, then sit a short free assessment after each release. Since 2026 the platform's main credentials have also attracted a yearly maintenance charge, so holding one turned into a recurring cost of ownership rather than a one-time outlay with homework attached.

The exam is the cheap part of this certificate

Ongoing obligationHow often it falls dueWhat it asks of youIf you let it slide
Release delta assessmentOnce per platform release, inside the window ServiceNow setsA short assessment covering what the release changed, with nothing to payThe credential lapses and cannot be revived by taking the delta late
Annual maintenance feeYearly, for mainline certifications, introduced during 2026A payment owed even where nothing was sat and nothing new was learnedYour status quietly drops out of currency, whatever your delta record shows
Starting again after a lapseOnly when one of the two above has been missedRe-earning eligibility with the fundamentals course, then paying for another attemptYou hold no certificate in the meantime, which partner staffing rules notice

Worth real money for partner work, close to nothing outside it

Sit it if you already work on an instance, if you are joining or applying to an implementation partner, or if your employer has bought the platform and someone on the team has to own it properly. Those three cases pay the certificate back quickly, and in the partner case an employer often absorbs the cost anyway, which changes the calculation entirely. The preparation route is unusual and worth knowing before you plan a budget: eligibility arrives by completing an on-demand fundamentals course that ServiceNow gives away, so study material is not the expensive part either. Build everything against a personal developer instance, because the questions are literal about where a thing lives in the product and no amount of reading substitutes for having clicked it. Avoid the exam if you are shopping for a general qualification in technology, if you have neither an employer nor a partner prospect in view, or if a recurring charge for something you already earned would grate on you every single year. There is an honest middle path. ITIL Foundation teaches the service-management vocabulary this platform assumes you already speak, it is recognised by plenty of organisations that have never bought a ServiceNow licence, and it survives a change of employer intact. That makes it the safer first purchase while you are still choosing a direction. Come to the CSA once you know whose instance you will be working on, and when you do, budget for the whole cycle instead of the sitting.

Frequently asked

Did the 2026 maintenance fee change whether this is worth it?
It changed the arithmetic, not the verdict. Anyone working on the platform, or billing through a partner, still comes out ahead, and employers frequently carry the charge. For somebody holding the certificate without using it, an annual payment for a dormant badge is a reason to let it go rather than pay indefinitely.
What actually happens when a release delta is missed?
The certificate lapses. ServiceNow puts out two platform releases each year and expects the short assessment inside the maintenance window attached to each, which is generous but finite. Recovery is not a late delta. It is the whole exam once more, once the fundamentals course has unlocked eligibility a second time.
Why is only the CSA covered on this site?
It is the one record we have verified. ServiceNow certifies application developers and a long row of implementation specialists for ITSM, CSM, HRSD and other products, each with its own prerequisites, and those exams are where a career on the platform usually goes next. Treat our coverage as the entry point only.
