Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)
The CAPM is PMI's entry certificate, aimed at people working on projects rather than leading them: terminology, the delivery lifecycle, predictive and adaptive approaches, and the business analysis frameworks around them.
Three hours in two sections, and a much lower eligibility bar than the credential above it.

Eligibility asks for a secondary qualification and a stated amount of formal project-management instruction, and no requirement to have led anything. That makes it genuinely reachable for coordinators, analysts and career changers, which is the point of it. The exam runs in two halves with an optional break, and some items are unscored trials that are indistinguishable from the rest, so hunting for them wastes effort.
The education requirement can be satisfied without this certificate
The contact hours needed to apply for the PMP can come from an accredited course, and holding this certificate is one way to meet them rather than the only way. That matters commercially: where the PMP's experience threshold is a year or two away, a course satisfies the same requirement, costs less than a course plus an exam, and does not start its own three-year renewal cycle running.
So who should still sit it? People whose experience will not reach the higher bar for several years and who need something on a CV now. Project coordinators and PMO staff whose role is unlikely to become project leadership. Business analysts, for whom the outline's analysis content is directly relevant. And career changers, for whom the structure of studying for it is worth as much as the certificate. In each of those cases the fee buys something real.
Two clocks, not one
Holding this starts a three-year renewal cycle of its own, with its own development requirement and its own fee. Somebody who takes it and then passes the higher credential eighteen months later is maintaining two certifications, and the lower one adds nothing to a CV that carries the higher. Which is the clearest practical case for treating it as a destination rather than a staging post, and for taking the course route instead when the higher credential is genuinely close.
| Domain (2023 outline) | Share | What it asks a coordinator to know |
|---|---|---|
| Project management fundamentals and core concepts | 36 % | The vocabulary, the lifecycle, and who is responsible for what |
| Business analysis frameworks | 27 % | Requirements, stakeholders, and how a need becomes a scope |
| Agile frameworks and methodologies | 20 % | Iterations, backlogs and roles, at the level of recognising them |
| Predictive, plan-based methodologies | 17 % | Schedules, baselines and the documents a traditional project produces |
- 150 questions in 180 minutes, split into two sections of 75 with an optional ten-minute break between them; fifteen of the questions are unscored pretest items you cannot identify.
- Not only multiple choice: matching, hotspot and multiple-response items turn up too.
- The pass mark is unpublished. PMI derives it statistically and reports bands per domain instead.
- Fourteen editions with German included, taken at Pearson VUE centres or online.
- A lower retake fee, and lower again for PMI members, though the membership arithmetic is less decisive here than at the PMP tier.
Against the PMP, in the columns that matter
The higher credential runs 230 minutes over 180 questions with two breaks, demands documented months of leading projects before you may apply, and is the one North American recruiters search for by name. This one runs 180 minutes over 150 questions, asks for a secondary qualification and a set number of contact hours, and is searched for by almost nobody. The business analysis domain is the one genuine advantage this paper holds over its parent: over a fourth of the outline, examined at a level the PMP does not reach, and directly useful to the analysts who are the certificate's best audience. Renewal is three years on 15 professional development units plus a fee, which is a lighter cycle than the parent's and still a cycle.
What a question looks like
Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.
A team is delivering in short iterations with changing requirements. A stakeholder asks for a fixed date and a fixed scope for work planned six months out. What is the appropriate response within the framework?
The instinctive answers are to refuse or to comply, and the framework wants neither. It expects you to recognise which delivery approach the situation calls for and to make the trade-off explicit rather than promising something the approach cannot deliver. The exam is not testing whether you can say no; it is testing whether you know why the request conflicts with the method.
What it costs to get and to keep
| Item | Amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Exam fee, member | 225 USD | PMI publishes fees only inside the application account; these figures come from the handbook as read and confirmed with providers (read 12 September 2026) |
| Exam fee, non-member | 300 USD | membership carries its own annual cost, so the saving matters most if you will also sit the higher exam (read 12 September 2026) |
| Required education | not published | a defined quantity of formal project-management contact hours before applying. Course prices vary far too widely to quote a figure (read 12 September 2026) |
| Renewal every three years | not published | 15 professional development units plus a renewal fee, which is a lighter cycle than the higher credential and still a cycle (read 12 September 2026) |
How much preparation, from where you are
- You coordinate projects or work in a PMO
- The intended reader. Most of the vocabulary will be familiar from meetings, and the study is learning the framework's version of it rather than your organisation's.
- You are changing career into project work
- The structure is worth as much as the certificate. Expect the adaptive and business analysis content to be the unfamiliar ground, since neither is intuitive without exposure.
- You will qualify for the PMP soon
- Do the arithmetic before booking. A course satisfying the contact-hours requirement gets you to the higher exam without a second certificate to maintain, and the higher credential makes this one invisible on a CV.
What passing this does not prove
- Whether you have ever delivered anything.
- Judgement under pressure, since every scenario is tidy.
- Stakeholder management as practised rather than as described.
- Anything about your industry, which shapes the real decisions.
Against the alternatives
- PMP — Project Management Professional (PMP)
- The credential employers name, gated behind documented leadership experience. If you can reach it within a couple of years, go there instead and take a course for the contact hours.
- PSM I — Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I)
- Cheaper, never expires, and narrower. A better purchase for somebody working in a scrum team specifically rather than in projects generally.
- PRINCE2 Foundation (Version 7) — PRINCE2 7 Foundation
- The comparable entry tier in markets where PRINCE2 dominates. Choose by which name appears in the adverts you intend to answer.
CAPM — quick answers
Does it make sense as a stepping stone to the PMP?
Usually not, where eventually turns out to mean the next year or so. The contact hours you need can come from a course, which is cheaper than a course plus this exam and does not begin a second renewal cycle. Should the PMP sit several years off, this puts something on record meanwhile.
Do I need project experience?
No, and that is the point of it. You need a secondary qualification and a defined quantity of formal project-management education. That makes it reachable for coordinators and career changers who cannot yet document the leadership the higher credential demands.
What is the passing score?
No figure is published here either. The threshold is derived psychometrically and results arrive as performance bands rather than a percentage, so practice-test scores are a rehearsal of the format rather than a prediction.
Why is business analysis such a large share?
Because PMI's 2023 outline rebuilt the exam around the people who actually sit it: coordinators and analysts who turn a stakeholder's need into a scope more often than they run a schedule. Over a fourth of the paper is that work, and it is the part a business analyst will find closest to their desk.
How does the two-section format work?
Seventy-five questions, an optional ten-minute break, then seventy-five more. You cannot return to the first section once the break begins, so review what you flagged before taking it. The break is worth taking; three hours of scenario questions wears down attention before knowledge.

Concepts this exam draws on
Glossary entries with the reason each one matters for CAPM.
- Project Charter
The outline opens with what authorises a project and who owns it.
- Project Scope
Scope definition and control span the predictive and adaptive halves of the outline.
- WBS
Decomposing scope into work packages is examined as a core predictive technique.
- Agile
A fifth of the outline is agile frameworks, at the level of recognising roles and events.
- Risk Register
Identifying and recording risks is entry-level material across all four domains.
- Stakeholder Management
The business-analysis domain is stakeholders and requirements more than it is anything else.
