Project Management Professional (PMP)

The thing to understand first is that the exam is the second obstacle. Before you may sit it you must document months of project leadership, with the requirement shorter for candidates holding a four-year degree and longer for those without, together with a stated amount of formal instruction, obtainable through a course or by holding the entry-level certificate. Applications are subject to audit. That process, not the questions, is where most prospective candidates stop, and it is why advice to just book the PMP is unhelpful.

Geography decides this more than merit

In North America recruiters screen for the three letters by name. Across Britain and much of the continent, tenders and government frameworks reach for PRINCE2 instead, and in German-speaking markets IPMA holds real ground. None of that reflects on which framework is better; it reflects which one the people writing job adverts learned. Read the postings you actually intend to answer before choosing, because the wrong credential in the wrong market is an expensive way to discover this.

Four hours, in practice

• 180 questions in 230 minutes, with two ten-minute breaks built in. Take the breaks; the paper is long enough that attention, not knowledge, fails first.
• Item types beyond multiple choice: multiple response, matching, hotspot and fill-in items all appear, and each rewards a different reading habit.
• No published pass mark. PMI sets it psychometrically and reports a performance band per domain, so a practice percentage predicts nothing precisely.
• Fifteen exam languages including German, delivered by Pearson VUE at centres and online.
• Scenario throughout. Nearly every stem describes a situation on a project and asks what the project manager should do next, not what a term means.

The July 2026 content outline splits the paper into People at 33 percent, Process at 41 and Business Environment at 26, and states that roughly two fifths of the items represent predictive approaches while the remaining three fifths divide between adaptive and hybrid. That last sentence retires a great deal of preparation material. Candidates from traditional delivery environments prepare for the exam PMI used to sell and meet one that asks, again and again, what a servant leader does when a stakeholder changes the priority mid-iteration. Process still carries the largest share, and process now means choosing an approach as much as executing one.

Holding the certificate means 60 professional development units every three years, at least 35 of them in education, and a renewal fee that is lower for members. The membership arithmetic is unusual in that it is not close: the member discount on a single sitting is large enough that most candidates should join before applying and decide later whether to stay. Retakes are priced below the first attempt and again lower for members, which the cost table records; the FAQ below says what a first-time failure actually costs in time.
