IT Certifications Courses

Exam-focused preparation for the certificates hiring managers actually check - CompTIA, Cisco, Microsoft, AWS and more

Every course in this section exists to get you through one specific exam, and that makes it the one category in the directory where a course can be technically excellent and still useless to you. Exams get new codes, new blueprints and new weightings every few years; the course that taught the last version is still sold, still well reviewed, and still wrong. The single most valuable habit here is to check the exam code before the star rating.

Read the exam code, not the year in the title

Course titles carry a year because the marketplace rewards it, and the year is usually the year the listing was last touched, not the year the content was reshot. The exam code is the fact that matters. The certification pages carry the current code and the retirement date where the vendor has published one.

What each course type is for

  • Full preparation courses teach the blueprint from zero. Worth it when the subject is new to you. Judge them on whether they follow the vendor's published objectives in order, because that is what the exam is built from.
  • Practice tests and question banks are not teaching material. Their job is to find the parts of the blueprint you are weak on and to get you used to the clock. Using them before you have studied teaches you the answers to those particular questions and nothing else.
  • Lab courses are the only ones that help with performance-based items, and performance-based items are where most people lose. If the exam has simulations, a course without hands-on work is half a preparation.

The free material comes first

Vendors publish the exam objectives, and often a full learning path, at no charge. That document is the authoritative scope, and every paid course is someone's interpretation of it. Read it first, use it to judge whether a course covers the whole blueprint, and come back to it at the end to find what you skipped. Each exam page links the vendor's free path, which pays no commission, alongside the paid options.

Order of purchase

First the objectives, which are free. Then one course that matches the current code. Then hands-on practice, if the exam has simulations. Then a practice test, in the last two weeks. Buying the practice test first is the most common and most expensive mistake in this category.

Concepts behind this area

Security

Firewall

A firewall is a control that allows or blocks network traffic according to rules about its source, destination, protocol and, in modern forms, its content and the application it belongs to.

Security

VPN (Virtual Private Network)

A virtual private network carries traffic through an encrypted tunnel over a public network so that a remote device or site behaves as though it were connected to a private one.

Security

Intrusion Detection and Prevention (IDS/IPS)

An intrusion detection system watches network traffic or host activity for signs of attack and raises alerts, while an intrusion prevention system sits inline and can block what it recognises.

Networking

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)

DHCP is the protocol by which a device joining a network asks for and receives an address, a subnet mask, a default gateway and DNS servers from a server, for a limited lease period, so that nobody has to configure addresses by hand.

Networking

Wireless LAN (Wi-Fi)

A wireless LAN connects devices to a network over radio using the 802.11 family of standards, through access points that bridge the wireless medium onto the wired network and enforce the authentication and encryption that the shared airwaves demand.

Networking

TCP/IP

TCP/IP is the family of protocols on which the internet runs: IP moves packets between addresses without guarantees, and TCP or UDP ride on top to deliver either a reliable ordered stream or fast unordered messages.

Cloud Computing

Object Storage

Object storage keeps every file as a self-contained object (the bytes, a unique key and some metadata) inside a flat bucket you read and write over HTTP, with no drive to mount and no directory tree underneath it.

Cloud Computing

Kubernetes

Kubernetes is an open-source system that runs containers across a cluster of machines, keeping the number and placement of running copies matched to a declared desired state, and restarting, rescheduling and scaling them without a person intervening.

Cloud Computing

IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service)

IaaS is the layer of cloud computing where you rent raw infrastructure through an API, meaning virtual machines, disks and networks, and take responsibility for the operating system and everything you install above it.

Hosting & Infrastructure

DNS (Domain Name System)

DNS is the distributed lookup system that turns a hostname such as getting-digital.net into the IP address a browser can connect to, by walking a chain of nameservers whose answers are then cached for a lifetime the domain's owner publishes.

Hosting & Infrastructure

SSL/TLS

SSL/TLS is the protocol that encrypts the connection between a browser and a server and, by way of a certificate signed by a certificate authority, proves the server is entitled to answer for the domain in the address bar.

Hosting & Infrastructure

Domain Name

A domain name is an address in the internet's public namespace that you rent through a registrar for a yearly fee, and it remains yours only while the registrar account holding it stays paid up and under your own control.

The field, explained: Hosting & Cloud

If the goal is a credential rather than a course, the certification guides state what each exam costs, how long it takes, how long it stays valid, and the free path the issuer publishes before any payment.

Frequently asked

How do I know if a course covers the current exam version?
Look for the exam code in the title or the first lines of the description, then compare it with the code on the vendor's exam page. If the course names no code at all, treat that as a warning: current courses advertise their version because it is a selling point.
Are certification courses worth it without taking the exam?
Sometimes. A blueprint is a curated syllabus written by people who know the subject, so working through one teaches real material. But you lose the part employers pay for, which is the external referee. If you are not going to sit the exam, a general course on the subject is usually better structured for learning.
Should I buy a bundle with a voucher included?
Only after checking what the voucher is worth on its own and whether it expires. Bundles are often good value, but a voucher for the version that is about to retire is a deadline, not a discount.
How long before the exam should I start?
Work backwards from the retirement date if there is one. For a fundamentals exam, several weeks of regular study is realistic; associate level takes a couple of months alongside a job; at professional and expert level the exam presumes years of practice, and a course only supplies the structure over it.
Does a pass on the old version become worthless when the code changes?
No. Certificates name the certification, not the exam code, and a pass survives the successor. What becomes worthless is preparation material for a version you can no longer sit, which is why the table above matters before you buy and not after.

Why Learn IT Certifications?

Structured preparation for the industry exams that open doors: CompTIA A+, Network+ and Security+, Cisco CCNA, Microsoft and AWS certifications, and the practice tests that make exam day boring. Courses here are judged by one metric - whether you pass.
