It is the clearest example on this site of a credential that is narrow and genuinely employable. Nobody hires a Salesforce administrator for general technical ability: the entire market is organisations running Salesforce, and inside that market this certificate functions close to a licence to practise. Job adverts name it, recruiters filter on it, and partner organisations count it. The trade is that almost none of it transfers outside the ecosystem, which is a sharper bargain than a cloud certificate asks you to make.

AspectThis certificateA cloud provider associate
Transfers between employersOnly within the ecosystemAcross everyone on that cloud
Named in advertsVery oftenOften
UpkeepA release module each yearRenewal exam or assessment
ExpiryNone, while maintainedTwo or three years
Outside the ecosystemLittle valueConcepts transfer
  • The credential was renamed from its previous administrator title during 2025, so older material and job adverts may use either name.
  • A maintenance module must be completed each year on the vendor's learning platform to keep it active. It is free, and forgetting it is the way people lose the certificate.
  • The pass mark differs by language edition, which is unusual and worth checking if you sit it in something other than English.
  • The exam now includes the agent tooling, reflecting where the platform has moved rather than where most orgs currently are.
  • A retake costs less than the original sitting, which is a small mercy at this fee level.

Eight sections, and the biggest is the one about data

The exam guide weights data and analytics management highest at 17 percent, then configuration and setup, the object manager and app builder, and workflow and process automation at 15 each. Sales applications, service applications and productivity and collaboration take 10 apiece, and the agent tooling closes the outline at 8. Read that as a description of the job: an administrator spends more time on reports, imports, duplicates and field history than on any single application, and the exam knows it. The automation share is where scenarios turn on which tool fits, and the agent section is small, new and examined as vocabulary: what the tooling is for, not how to build with it.

Edition, alignment and the second attempt

  • Sixty scored questions plus up to five unscored, in 105 minutes, proctored on site or online.
  • Two editions with two pass marks: 68 percent in English, 65 in Japanese. Nothing else on this site scores by language.
  • Questions align to the Summer '25 release, and the platform moves three times a year, so material written for an older release can describe screens that no longer exist.
  • A retake costs half the first sitting, plus taxes on both, and there is no cheaper route in than the free trail material.
  • No prerequisite, with six months to a year of administering a real org recommended, which is the honest minimum for the scenario questions.

A free developer org is the whole preparation kit

Salesforce gives away a fully functional development edition. Build a custom object, wire a validation rule and a flow to it, load a spreadsheet of deliberately messy data through the import tool, and set up sharing so that two users see different records. That single afternoon covers five of the eight sections in a way no amount of reading does, and the exam's scenarios describe exactly the mistakes you will make along the way.

Maintenance deserves its own sentence because it is the reason certified administrators quietly stop being certified. Once a year, tied to a release cycle, a free module on Trailhead has to be completed inside a stated window; there is no fee and no exam, and nothing about it feels like a deadline until the credential shows as inactive. Set the reminder before you book the exam. For the reader deciding whether to specialise this far, the arithmetic is unusually clear: inside the ecosystem the demand is large and persistent, outside it the certificate is a line nobody reads, and the choice is about which market you want to be hired in rather than about the exam.

What a question looks like

Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.

A manager should see all records owned by their team but not records owned by other teams, while a small group of auditors must see everything read-only. The organisation-wide default is private. Which combination of features delivers this without granting broad administrative rights?

Sharing is the part of this platform where several mechanisms overlap and a careless answer grants far more access than intended. Several options produce the visible outcome and only one does it without opening something else, which is precisely the mistake that turns into an audit finding. Candidates who administer a simple org rarely meet the interaction between these features.

Retake100 USDplus taxes, and lower than the first sitting, which is unusual among the exams covered here (read 12 September 2026)

How much preparation, from where you are

You administer an org already
The gaps are usually sharing at depth and whichever automation your org does not use. The recommended background is several months to a year of hands-on administration, which is fair.
You are a power user moving into administration
A realistic move and a common one. Reports and configuration will be familiar; the security model and automation will not, and the security model carries the heaviest consequences.
You are changing career entirely
The ecosystem is unusually welcoming to career changers, with a free practice environment and a large body of official training. Get an org of your own and build in it, because the exam assumes you have.

What passing this does not prove

  • Whether your configuration will still be maintainable in two years.
  • Anything about the business processes the platform is supposed to support.
  • Development on the platform, which has its own credentials.
  • Anything at all outside this ecosystem.

Against the alternatives

CSAServiceNow Certified System Administrator (CSA)
The closest comparison on this site: another enterprise platform where the certificate is near-mandatory inside the ecosystem. One of them now charges yearly; this asks only for a free module.
PL-900Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Fundamentals
Microsoft's business-application fundamentals paper, broader and shallower. That names what exists; this certifies that you can run it.
MS-102Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert
A different enterprise estate again, administered rather than implemented. Comparable in kind rather than in content, and that one is retiring.

Platform Administrator — quick answers

Is a single-ecosystem certificate a good bet?

It is a real bargain rather than a trick. Inside the ecosystem the demand is large and persistent and the certificate is close to required; outside it, almost nothing transfers. If you are willing to specialise, this is one of the more reliably employable credentials covered here. If you want optionality, it is the wrong purchase.

What does maintenance actually involve?

A free module on the vendor's learning platform after each major release, completed within the stated window. There is no fee and no exam. The failure mode is forgetting, because nothing about it feels like a deadline until the credential shows as inactive.

Do I need experience before sitting it?

Not formally, and the vendor recommends several months to a year of administering a real org. The exam is full of scenarios that assume you have configured sharing, built automation and watched both misbehave. A free practice environment closes most of that gap if you actually build in it.

Why is the pass mark different in Japanese?

Salesforce sets the cut score per language edition, and the Japanese edition passes at 65 percent against 68 in English. The vendor does not explain the gap; the practical consequence is that a candidate sitting in Japanese should not take an English practice score as the target.

Does the agent tooling section matter much?

Not yet by weight, at 8 percent of the outline. It matters as a signal of where the vendor is taking the platform, and the questions ask what the tooling is for rather than how to build with it. Learn the vocabulary; do not sink your preparation into it.
