HubSpot AEO Fundamentals Certification

If you go looking for HubSpot's SEO certification you will find a retirement notice, and the old training link now leads here. AEO Fundamentals, answer engine optimisation, treats search visibility and AI answers as one problem: being found by people who search and being cited by the systems that answer on their behalf.

Seven lessons, about two hours and twenty minutes, free, English only, valid for two years.

How to prepare

  1. 1. The programme

The certificate is earned inside this programme. Its facts, price and the provider's own page are on the course page; the link there carries no commission.

Affiliate disclosure: the course link above is an affiliate link — buying through them may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. The vendor's learning path and booking links carry no commission.

Why the SEO certificate disappeared

HubSpot's pages for its SEO course and SEO Certification course now carry the same short message: the course has been retired. The link the company used for SEO training redirects to AEO Fundamentals. HubSpot has not published an explanation, and we will not invent one, but the syllabus speaks for itself. The new course does not abandon SEO. It treats classic search results and AI-generated answers as two surfaces of the same visibility problem, and asks you to plan for both.

For anyone who held the old SEO certificate, the practical consequence is simple. There is no like-for-like renewal path; the nearest current credential from HubSpot is this one, and it is shorter and differently focused.

What the seven lessons ask of you

  • Explain how answer engines changed visibility, and what that means for traffic you used to count on.
  • Apply the EEAT framework as common ground for ranking and for being cited.
  • Plan content from keyword research so that it serves both surfaces.
  • Optimise a page to be cited by AI systems, the most novel part of the course.
  • Measure AI visibility alongside search performance.

A young field, examined early

The ground is moving under this syllabus

How AI systems choose which sources to cite is not documented by the companies that run them, and practitioners' advice changes month to month. A certificate in the subject captures one vendor's current understanding. Treat it as a structured introduction, and expect parts of it to date faster than its two-year validity.

That caveat does not make the course a poor choice. For a marketer who learned search a decade ago and now hears that traffic is leaking into AI answers, a short, free, well-organised course is exactly the right response. It also sits sensibly beside HubSpot's longer Content Marketing certificate, which supplies the craft this one assumes. Semrush's Content-Led SEO is the more tactical free alternative if links and rankings are your main concern.

Reading the course with the right expectations

Seven lessons in a little over two hours is a short course, and it is honest about its level: the title says fundamentals. The lesson on optimising for AI citations runs longest and is the most hands-on, and it is worth watching twice. The measurement lesson is the most provisional, because measuring presence in AI answers is still an immature practice, and the tools for it differ from one vendor to the next. Take its methods as a starting framework rather than a finished standard.

Renewal after two years will almost certainly mean a different exam, because a course in a field this new will be revised. Waiting would be the wrong conclusion; the better one is to treat the certificate as a dated snapshot and keep reading after you pass.

What a question looks like

Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.

A travel insurer's guide pages still rank well, but analytics show falling clicks while its brand is rarely mentioned in AI-generated answers about travel cover. Which change is most likely to improve how often its content is cited?

The instinct is to chase rankings harder. The question expects you to see that ranking and being cited are separate outcomes, and that citation favours clear, well-sourced, directly answering passages from a source that demonstrates expertise.

How much preparation, from where you are

Experienced SEO
Short. Concentrate on the citation and measurement lessons, which are where the new material lives.
Content marketer with little search background
Take HubSpot's Content Marketing course first or alongside; this one assumes you can already produce the content.

What passing this does not prove

  • Technical SEO of any depth.
  • How any particular AI system actually selects its sources, which is not public.
  • Link building and digital PR.
  • Whether your measures of AI visibility are reliable.

Against the alternatives

Content-Led SEO with Brian Dean
Semrush's course is longer, tactical and focused on rankings and links. AEO Fundamentals is shorter and focused on the shift toward AI answers. Different gaps, both free.
HubSpot Content Marketing Certification
Content Marketing teaches how to make the thing worth citing; AEO teaches how to make it citable. The first is the foundation.

HubSpot AEO Fundamentals Certification — quick answers

Does HubSpot still offer an SEO certification?

No. HubSpot's SEO course and SEO Certification course are marked as retired, and the address it used for SEO training now redirects to AEO Fundamentals.

What does AEO stand for?

Answer engine optimisation: making content visible and citable in AI systems that answer questions directly, alongside ordinary search results.

Is the AEO certification free?

Yes. Course and exam are free on HubSpot Academy.

How much time should I set aside?

HubSpot lists seven lessons and about two hours and twenty minutes of material, plus the exam.

Should holders of the old SEO certificate bother?

Yes, as an update rather than a renewal. It covers ground the old course could not, and it is short enough to justify on that alone.
