HubSpot Content Marketing Certification
At more than eight hours of video across fourteen lessons, this is the longest of the HubSpot certifications covered here, and it takes content seriously as a discipline: storytelling, a repeatable creation framework, long-range planning, topic clusters, promotion and measurement.
The exam is free and unproctored, and the certificate lasts two years.

How to prepare
1. The programme
The certificate is earned inside this programme. Its facts, price and the provider's own page are on the course page; the link there carries no commission.

Craft first, then system
Most content marketing courses start with keywords and treat writing as the step between research and publishing. This one opens with storytelling and a framework for producing content consistently, and only then turns to search. The order is a statement: content that nobody wants to finish will not be saved by optimisation. It suits writers who have been told to become marketers, and marketers who have been told to publish more without being told how.
The later lessons are more tactical. HubSpot explains how it uses its own blog to rank, how to organise a site into pillar pages with clustered topics, how to squeeze more value from each piece through repurposing, and how to promote and measure what you publish. The SEO material is practical rather than technical: architecture of content, not of servers.
What the fourteen lessons cover
| Block | Lessons |
|---|---|
| Foundations | Storytelling, a content creation framework, long-term strategy, generating ideas |
| Production | Blog writing, repurposing, video strategy |
| Search and reach | How HubSpot ranks with its blog, pillar pages with clustered topics, guest blogging, promotion |
| Proof | Measuring and analysing content |
- 54 videos and 11 quizzes, a little over eight hours in total.
- Four languages: English, German, Spanish and French.
- A single-sitting exam; a failed attempt means a twelve-hour wait.
- Good for two years; renewal is a retake.
Honest limits
A multiple-choice exam can check that you know what a pillar page is; it cannot check that you can write one worth linking to. The certificate therefore proves exposure to a sound method, and a portfolio has to prove the rest. The course also reflects the world as HubSpot's own blog experienced it, which is the world of a large, long-established publisher. Some tactics that work at that scale take a long time to pay off for a small site. Read the ranking lesson as a case study, not a guarantee.
HubSpot does not publish the exam's question count or pass mark. The time limit appears in the course once you sign in, and the score is the share of questions answered correctly.
Pacing eight hours of video
Few people watch eight hours of anything in order, and the course does not require it. A practical plan is to take the foundations block first, because the exam assumes its vocabulary, then the search lessons, and to leave repurposing and video for last if time is short. The eleven quizzes are spread through the lessons and make natural checkpoints. Apply one lesson a week to real content if you can: a single pillar page built alongside the course teaches more than the whole course watched passively.
Once earned it holds for two years, and renewing means only a retake, not the lessons. That makes it one of the cheaper credentials to maintain in time, which suits a subject whose principles change slowly even when search engines change quickly. The storytelling and planning lessons in particular will read as sensibly in two years as they do now; the search tactics are the part to recheck.
What a question looks like
Written by us in the exam's style. It is not a real question from any question bank, and we do not publish those.
A consultancy has forty blog posts on loosely related topics, several of which compete for the same search terms. Traffic has plateaued. Which restructuring is most likely to help search engines and readers understand what the site is about?
Writing more, deleting old posts and buying links are all tempting. The expected answer organises existing content around a small number of pillar topics with linked supporting pieces, and resolves the posts that compete with each other, which requires recognising a structural problem rather than a volume problem.

How much preparation, from where you are
- Writer or journalist moving into marketing
- The first half will feel natural. Spend your effort on topic clusters, promotion and measurement.
- SEO specialist
- The search lessons will be familiar; the storytelling and framework lessons are where the exam will surprise you.
What passing this does not prove
- Whether your writing is any good.
- Technical SEO: crawling, indexing, site speed or structured data.
- Editorial management of a team or a budget.
- Distribution through paid channels.
Against the alternatives
- Content-Led SEO with Brian Dean
- Semrush's course with Brian Dean is narrower and more aggressive about links and ranking tactics. HubSpot's is broader and more patient. Both are free; the HubSpot certificate lasts twice as long.
- HubSpot Inbound Marketing Certification
- Inbound gives the whole method in outline; Content Marketing is the deep version of its first stage. Take Inbound first if marketing is new to you.
- HubSpot AEO Fundamentals Certification
- HubSpot's newer AEO certificate addresses visibility in AI answers as well as search results. Content Marketing is the better foundation, AEO the more current add-on.
